. When Will There be Good News?
City Travel Guides > Books > Subjects
by: Kate Atkinson
August 14, 2008
As usual, a brilliant turn from Ms Atkinson. Her book are always unputdownable - my only complaint is that I get through them too quickly.
Someone should go through this book and count the number of bodies - it must number in the hundreds! This book has a much darker tone than her previous two crime novels.
I loved the character of Reggie but did find her story rather far-fetched - how many unusual things can happen to one person in one day? And I also found the conning of Jackson at the end a bit far-fetched and unbelievable. He just doesn't seem the type to marry someone after just four months.
Can anyone help me with a loose strand of the plot that I can't tie up: Dr Hunter gave Andrew Decker the gun and persuaded him ... Read More:

. 1984 Nineteen Eighty-Four
City Travel Guides > Books > Subjects
by: George Orwell
January 29, 2004
It is tempting with the `wisdom' of the twentieth century to dismiss as irrelevant a book guilty of false prophecy. However the achievement of George Orwell's masterpiece is not to be found in the accuracies of his predictions, but in its warning about the danger of power unchecked and the lengths to which those in power will go in order to remain there.
We are presented with a vision of the future (now our past) in which the world is divided amongst the totalitarian superpowers of Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia. Our story is set in a London controlled by `The Party' - who presence is felt by the ubiquitous Big Brother and its enforcement arm the Thought Police; told through the figure of Winston Smith: a lonely and silently dissident low-level ... . The Art of War
City Travel Guides > Books > Subjects

I'm not especially interested in military history, neither am I a manager or businessman, but I still found this book very enjoyable. It has the rare appeal of being of its time but at the same time applicable to the present day. Many of the insights feel very contemporary - not simply to the business arena but to any aspect of life. The style is terse and aphoristic, which means that it doesn't really matter that the book is quite short. Even the chapters on terrain tactics are interesting from a historical point of view. I would also recommend a book called the Fall by Steve Taylor for its insights into the origins and history of warfare and social conflict The Fall:the Insanity of the Ego in Human History and the Dawning of a New Era: The Insanity of the Ego in Human History ... I do like a bit of hedgerow and it's great to enjoy the free gifts from Mother Nature, but until I got my hands on a copy of this pocket sized guide, it was a little unclear.
This book is ideal and helps you understand what's under your nose in the gardens! So many common plants can be used in cooking and yet still we pay mini-fortunes for little bags of this and that in the shops. This book certainly helped me to identify and try some of the more obscure plants that I had absolutely no idea I could eat.
It's clear descriptions of what they look like alongside nice imagery of the plants themselves help you feel brave enough to give them a pluck and cook and the warnings are there to be heeded, particularly when it comes to mushrooms (personally, I'd only ... Read More:
