This guide to New York is without question one of the best out there. In true Timeout style, there is no sugarcoating or waffling in sight. What you get from this is a guide that finds out what is the best of the best and doesn't bother with the information you don't need. The book itself is divided into the different New York neighbour hoods with comprehensive and up to date info on each. What is also interesting is the amount of information you get on the more social aspect of the city. When people think of New York you think, Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty, which are great, but to capture the true essence of the city you need to dig a little deeper and this is what the people at timeout are trying to do in the guide. While studying in Edinburgh last year, I went to Venice for a week with a friend of mine last March. Armed with both the Lonely Planet Venice and Time Out: Venice guidebooks, we found the Time Out book to be wonderfully helpful. One of the best things about it was that it included (at least, last year's version did) a map of all the public toilets in Venice, which, let me tell you, is a very good thing. The book itself was informative, interesting, and well-written, the advice given was very sound, and, though accurate maps of Venice are notoriously hard to find, those in the Time Out guide were much more helpful than those in the Lonely Planet. The entry for Cannes is very disappointing in terms of restaurants. The food and the service in la Liberia is at best indifferent and it is definitely not worth a visit; for an excellent (if slightly pricey Italian) visit the exceptionally busy Vesuvio on La Croisette, near the Martinez. Unaccountably, no mention is made of Gastoun Gastounette, one of the best restaurants in the town, despite the fact that it is virtually next door to the La Pizza, which is mentioned, in quai St-Pierre. The entry for Le 72 Croisette is grossly exaggerated: there is no need to battle through any hordes - it is at least half empty most of the time and you would find it difficult to see anyone going into the Martinez as you would need X-ray vision to see through several ... Unlike so many other "guides" this hits home bigtime. Being an fairly experienced Moscow traveller I feel this has been written by those who at the very least are streetwise. Many other guides are at best little better than souped-up tourist brochures, and at worst completely useless. Remember this is the Wild Wild East, and a good guide makes an invaluable companion. Therefore I can honestly say this is the best guide money can buy. It is packed full of valuable, up-to-date and solid information.

If you want something quick and easy, dont get this, but i did find it useful for 'research' before i went. I found that once i was out there, i wanted info quickly and concisely, and this wasn't the best one for it. Maps were okay and easy to use but im afraid this just wasn't my favourite out of the ones i took with me.

It was well laid out however, in easy to use sections for the topic and neighbourhood. I wouldnt rule out this one altogether, it's all down to personal taste, and if you like the Time Out in general, then you'll probably be okay with this guide.
