Casing hands have a reputation for embellishing the truth.

They also enjoy macho posturing - hence the side trip to Afghanistan, a country that has nothing to do with the oil industry.

Don't believe every word of it. I work in the oil industry and was able to second guess the outcome of many escapades.

I bought this book at Calabruix, my hometown bookshop in Sóller, now Anna Nicholas hometown. Years ago I had read "My Family and Other Animals" by Gerald Durrell, and had the hunch that this book was going to turn out something similar but happening in the mountains of Mallorca nowadays instead of Corfu in the 1930's. Well, the book is obviously different but equally delightful. Anna Nicholas is in Sóller to stay, not as a "blown in", and has become part of the valley, not just by loving its nature but mostly by understanding its people and their way of living. By sharing their way of living. An enjoyably light read that doesn't try to over-claim for what is quite a slight piece of investigative journalism. The style is similar to Louis Theroux: ask innocent sounding questions, and let people talk. And quite soon you're thinking...are these people for real? In this case that's a pretty serious question, because these people are in charge of the most powerful military in the world. But in the end, too many questions are left unasked, never mind unanswered.

Norman Lewis's son is a friend of mine and has been for twenty years. For twenty years I've drunk beer, watched football, told jokes and (in the dim & distant past) chased girls with the son. I even met the father once. It was not until I read the back of a Norman Lewis book last year & saw the picture, that I put two and two together. "Yep, that's my Dad". Astonishing!

I read that book,A Dragon Apparent, and enjoyed it, but not really enough to run out & buy others. I dont read much travel writing in general but it was undeniably well written, interesting & felt it was doing me good. On a whim I bought this one, Naples 44, last week and it is a real step up. For me this was a book that got better as it went along. I was fascinated by the descriptions of tribal life, and found I had to admire Corinne for her determination and sheer guts. At the beginning the obsessive way the she referred to her husband ('my Masai', 'my darling', etc) really put me off - it was like some rather unsettling fictional unreliable narrator - but by about half-way through I found I couldn't put the book down.

It's not great literature, and I do feel that - particularly at the beginning - the style and structure could have been greatly improved. However, it was a fascinating tale, full of interesting detail and observation. Thankfully i managed to record all four episodes of Francescos very entertaining Top to Toe series on Italy onto disc.

His ladish exploits in that gorgeous Alfa Spider made the series a more lite hearted affair to his magnificent Venice,and his influnce in being one of the oldest Venitian families opened doors into fabulous palaces and villas that are barred to all members of the public.
Naturally he could not spend too long in the north of the country but witnessing Lucca, Puccinis birthplace and Bolognia the oldest university in the world made what he did choose trully excelleny.Veronia was where Shakespeare based Romeo and Juiliet but Shakey never visited the place.
