. I Wouldn't Start from Here: The 21st Century And Where It All Went Wrong
City Travel Guides > Books > Travel Writing
by: Andrew Mueller
August 01, 2008
After a mildly shaky start (in my uninformed, only-read-10-books-in-the-last-5-years view), which seemed a bit "over-written" at times, this book evened out into one of the most thought-provoking, entertaining and interesting things I've read in ages.
I actually find myself caring about the guy, which is odd for a journalist-written travelogue around the world's warzones and trouble spots. I even felt for him as he described his break up with his girlfriend. I want to take him out for a beer.
Andrew Mueller is a genuinely interesting, no-bulls**t guy, who never over-dramatises, never forgets who he is and where he is, and never makes the mistake of not questing the rationale of everyone he meets. It's made me realise what a lipstick leftie ... Read More:

. This Gaming Life: Travels in Three Cities
City Travel Guides > Books > Travel Writing
by: Jim Rossignol
July 15, 2008
I was cautiously optimistic about this book; I had heard good things and had read articles on gaming sites that had been written by the author. The book did not disappoint in any way.
This is an ambitious book that raises such questions as what gaming is, how it meshes with human nature as a whole and how gaming differs in different cultures. The author obviously displays a thorough knowledge of games and gaming but he also conveys relevant and interesting observations about the people he meets and the places he visits on his extensive travels.
The book is extremely well written. The author subscribes to the philosophy that it is best to present complex ideas in simple terms. It makes the text a pleasant and satisfying read. The author uses ... Read More:

. A Year in Provence
City Travel Guides > Books > Travel Writing
by: Peter Mayle
June 01, 2000
I've avoided this book until now because I remember the fuss about it at the time and experience has taught me that bestsellers are to be approached with caution, if not actually burnt. But my prejudice was entirely wrong - it's wonderful. Truly funny (I laughed aloud more than once) and written beautifully. The style Mayle uses - you'll recognise that amiable observer thing at once - is an oldy but a goody and he's much more elegant than Bill Bryson.
What's also interesting is the fact it's twenty years old now, which makes me wonder how much Provence has changed and whether the book is as much a slice of late eighties life, a historical piece, as the people in the book themselves.
The only thing I would have liked was more background detail ... Read More:

. Travels with Charley: In Search of America (Penguin Modern Classics)
City Travel Guides > Books > Travel Writing
by: John Steinbeck
March 01, 2001
(4.5 stars) When John Steinbeck obeys a life-long urge to drive from coast to coast in 1960, he little anticipates the variety of the "American experience." Beginning in Maine and traveling along the northern states through Wisconsin, the Badlands, Montana, and all places in between, to Washington and Oregon, Steinbeck then decides to visit his childhood community of Salinas, in northern California. After meeting with friends there, though many have died, he then drives southward through the length of California and then eastward through the southwest desert to Texas, Louisiana, and eventually up to Virginia before returning to New York.
Carrying the reader along with him as he reconstructs this journey for publication in 1962, Steinbeck observes people and human ... Read More:

. Yoga School Dropout
City Travel Guides > Books > Travel Writing
by: Lucy Edge
April 06, 2006
Lucy Edge had written a warm, humane account of her genuine search for enlightenment and a husband amongst the ashrams of India! She weaves in her background reading beautifully, as she describes her adventures in each of the ashrams. One comes away from reading her book, better informed about the history and current status of the various ashrams, than one realizes. Her account of the Osho ashram in Pune is particularly charming. Her english prudishness is honestly described and she comes across all the more convincingly because of it. But most importantly, the book is a real joy to read and her openheartedness invites a similar response in the reader.

. Midnight in Sicily (Panther)
City Travel Guides > Books > Travel Writing
by: Peter Robb
May 06, 1999
This is an excellent book, but although there's some original stuff, it's really more a synthesis of the works of others than anything else. While Robb pulls it all together extremely well, he fails to attribute his sources adequately, using italics in an awkward and, for a reader, distracting fashion where he quotes other writers. He also neglects to relate specific quotes to their sources, which may have been an editorial decision intended not to put off the more casual readers. Nevertheless, this makes for a frustrating read at times. I kept seeing the work of Norman Lewis, in his riveting and beautifully written book The Honoured Society, quoted here without any direct attribution, and returned to that book often as I was reading Robb's. Lewis is far better, but this brings you up to ... Read More:
