City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Toujours Provence
.Toujours Provence
City Travel Guides > Books > Travel Writing
by: Peter Mayle

June 28, 2001
Having thoroughly enjoyed A Year in Provence I was pleasantly suprised to find that Toujours Provence is even more entertaining. It is written in the same vain as it's predecessor, describing beautifully the rich scenery, characters and events of rural France, but as the author has more experiences to draw upon for this book, the stories have a bit more variety. Pour yourself a glass of wine and enjoy a very entertaining read !

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Pies and Prejudice: In Search of the North
.Pies and Prejudice: In Search of the North
City Travel Guides > Books > Travel Writing
by: Stuart Maconie

February 01, 2007
This is a superb book; although it has the appearance of belonging to the recently emerged sub genre of humorous and slightly outrageous travel writing, it quickly become apparent that there's far more to it than that. Maconie takes us on a selective tour of the North of England, visiting both his old haunts and other key areas, such as Liverpool, Harrogate and other parts of Yorkshire. Along the way, there are recollections of various amusing personal incidents and a stock of good one-liners, but alongside these, there's a depth of historical, cultural, political and social information and analysis, which is both well researched and convincingly argued. Well worth reading.

An aimless and tedious meander through British life as seen from an outsider's point of view. Some of this book is very funny but it is full of pointless anecdotes and inane drivel. This book is too long and much of it is instantly forgettable. Not good!

by: Bernie Friend

April 28, 2008
The author goes through a number of distressing ordeals before setting off on what must have been an epic quest for a rookie cyclist still raw from great grief. After all, this was hardly a slow pedal to the shops!
And it is the adventure which makes this story so interesting - the random characters and obscure places visited enroute.
This is not just a journey of the body, but also of the mind as the writer discovers the true secret of cycle touring, absorbing the countries around you and taking the time out to think and relax.
This two wheeled healing process is punctuated superbly with hilarious encounters with unlikely lodging offerers, wild loose shaggy bulls, rabid bike hungry dogs, drunken Swedish card schools and geriatric half ... Read More:

This is a must read for anyone planning a long term visit to Switz. I have taken up an assignment in Switz for a period of 18 months and found this book very useful. It has eased my stress of visiting a new country for the first time.

The contents are logically arranged and the language used is simple and plain english.

Highly recommended

This is a well written account of an amazing year on Everest but climbing the highest peak on the planet is only half of it. This book opens the door into the darkest recesses of the human mind and shows the extraordinary determination, mental strength and overriding will to survive that we as humans are capable of. Perhaps strange but it made me want to climb a mountain!

I picked up this book to take on holiday. It's gripping reading and I managed to get through the whole thing comfortably in a week. The 350 or so pages have fairly large text.

The book documents their trials and tribulations whilst travelling east around the world from london through europe, asia, and north america to new york and does so in great detail. It made me feel like I was almost there with them experiencing some of the joys and sadness.

A lot of the book focuses on the scenery, people who they meet along the way, and various border, bike and language issues.

For me, the stories are well written within and the two differing and alternating views of the journey make the read much more interesting.

extremely enjoyable ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Encore Provence
.Encore Provence
City Travel Guides > Books > Travel Writing
by: Peter Mayle

June 01, 2000
Twelve years ago, Peter Mayle gifted us with "A Year In Provence", an account of this expatriate Brit's plunge into Gallic life, revolving around the pleasures and pitfalls of establishing a residence in rural France in an old country house that was somewhat of a "fixer-upper". Several Provence-related books later, and after a period of time living on Long Island, Peter and his wife return to the land they (and we) love. The result is "Encore Provence". The latest book doesn't hold together as well as "Year", the elements of the latter forming a more cohesive whole. However, "Encore" is certainly much better than some of his other books written in the interim.

In "Encore", Peter briefly revisits several topics covered in the original, as well as several more which were apparently ... Read More:

Having been leant this book by a friend of mine who studied Aikido for a year or so and, being a person that is fascinated by martial arts and an ex practitioner of Judo (a similar martial art) and currently doing kung fu, I was compelled to buy this book myself so that I may own my own copy of it. The book is compulsive reading and once you get into it it is hard to put down. The book is quite comical in places where Robert gets into all number of scrapes and acquires injuries, a Japanese girlfriend and must undertake a visit to the dreaded Japanese dentist!

As someone that has long been a fan of Japan and looking to visit there in the near future this book conjured up all kinds of imagery and ideas of what I might do when I do visit. The book inspired me through hard times during ... Read More:

I read a review of this in the Guardian and was instantly interested. I'm trying to do whatever I can to eat ethically and this is a great book to make people aware of the plight of our oceans.

The author provides a completely unbiased view of the the plights of specific species and writes in depth of not only the usual factors we associate (overfishing, global warming), but of trophic levels and the invasion of habitat by alien species.

After finishing this book I am now far more aware of what I take and put in to the oceans.
