I purchased this book as I adore Italy, I have never been to Venice but it is on my lengthy list! I saw this book and I admit it, I fell in love with the romantic cover! The inside did not disappoint either, Marlena de Blasi creates rich vivid descriptions, conjuring up the smells, tastes and feel of Venice as she writes. Dotted amongst the descriptive text are delicious recipes of Venetian dishes, which I have not tried yet, but plan to.

The earthy sensuality of this novel unravels as you learn the story of an American lady moving to Venice and falling in love with Fernando, a Venetian man she meets. I have just completed my first trip (am I mad enough to do it again ?) along the Mother Road and this book is one of the essentials that you must have with you.

Each night I would use this book to check out what and where we would visit the next day. My Wife and Daughters called this book the 'Little Fat Book' and it was constantly being read and passed around the car. One simple and brilliant feature is along the top of each page the mileage is printed so it is easy to know where you are and how long until you reach your next stop.

This is a must buy if you are planning your journey and keep it handy in the car too, endless reading for such a compact book.

I bought this book in Tokyo before travelling to Vladivostok - not because it was my preferred choice, but because it was the only one I could find.

Whilst I agree with what the other reviewers have said, I couldn't have completed my Trans-Siberian trip without this book. I'd never have found the cheaper hotels along the route, nor had a clue what to see or how to get there. Unlike most destinations these days, a guide book is absolutely essential for independent Trans-Sib travellers and this one is not the best, but is better than none at all.

I agree with most of the above comments on this book. It certainly opened my eyes to the exhaustive process of wine making and French Beaurocracy! I certainly shall not quibble about the price of a good wine again!!!

Patricia is a complete inspiration and a very good writer.

I am so pleased to see (from her website) that she appears to be going from strength to strength.

She describes the people in this book so well that when there is a death, you feel it, and the news that one in particular died made me cry.

I shall certainly be buying her next book.

I read both of Fermor's books of his trek from UK towards Instanbul in sequence, and enjoyed both hugely. It was a great pity he never produced the projected 3rd volume! This (2nd) volume covers his travels through Hungary and Romania, largely by being befriended by local people and being in turn passed on to their friends, so he had the enormous luck of not only their open-handed hospitality but also of their local knowledge. Many of these characters are compelling: I especially loved the studious land-owner who opened the conversation by asking what was Fermor's special research topic. He was clearly disapproving that the 19y old had not got one, and was only mollified by his evidently wide classical reading. Fermor writes perceptively and sympathetically, ... Read More:

Having thoroughly enjoyed A Year in Provence I was pleasantly suprised to find that Toujours Provence is even more entertaining. It is written in the same vain as it's predecessor, describing beautifully the rich scenery, characters and events of rural France, but as the author has more experiences to draw upon for this book, the stories have a bit more variety. Pour yourself a glass of wine and enjoy a very entertaining read !

Having been leant this book by a friend of mine who studied Aikido for a year or so and, being a person that is fascinated by martial arts and an ex practitioner of Judo (a similar martial art) and currently doing kung fu, I was compelled to buy this book myself so that I may own my own copy of it. The book is compulsive reading and once you get into it it is hard to put down. The book is quite comical in places where Robert gets into all number of scrapes and acquires injuries, a Japanese girlfriend and must undertake a visit to the dreaded Japanese dentist!

As someone that has long been a fan of Japan and looking to visit there in the near future this book conjured up all kinds of imagery and ideas of what I might do when I do visit. The book inspired ... Read More:
