I bought this book at Calabruix, my hometown bookshop in Sóller, now Anna Nicholas hometown. Years ago I had read "My Family and Other Animals" by Gerald Durrell, and had the hunch that this book was going to turn out something similar but happening in the mountains of Mallorca nowadays instead of Corfu in the 1930's. Well, the book is obviously different but equally delightful. Anna Nicholas is in Sóller to stay, not as a "blown in", and has become part of the valley, not just by loving its nature but mostly by understanding its people and their way of living. I've avoided this book until now because I remember the fuss about it at the time and experience has taught me that bestsellers are to be approached with caution, if not actually burnt. But my prejudice was entirely wrong - it's wonderful. Truly funny (I laughed aloud more than once) and written beautifully. The style Mayle uses - you'll recognise that amiable observer thing at once - is an oldy but a goody and he's much more elegant than Bill Bryson.

What's also interesting is the fact it's twenty years old now, which makes me wonder how much Provence has changed and whether the book is as much a slice of late eighties life, a historical piece, as the people in the book themselves.

Thankfully i managed to record all four episodes of Francescos very entertaining Top to Toe series on Italy onto disc.

His ladish exploits in that gorgeous Alfa Spider made the series a more lite hearted affair to his magnificent Venice,and his influnce in being one of the oldest Venitian families opened doors into fabulous palaces and villas that are barred to all members of the public.
Naturally he could not spend too long in the north of the country but witnessing Lucca, Puccinis birthplace and Bolognia the oldest university in the world made what he did choose trully excelleny.Veronia was where Shakespeare based Romeo and Juiliet but Shakey never visited the place.

This whole series of books is seriously inspiring and a complete joy to browse through. The photos are breathtaking, the commentary is engaging and the whole book is thoroughly compelling. I've already booked my next holiday to include 3 of the suggestions made in these books!

a very good atlas, good handy size, easy to read reference, and clear and up to date road/station/building points. bought this for use in the car and has not let me down. thought it might be squishy in between pages, but isnt at all.

This is a rather unprofessional and distorted piece of work as neither the author nor the publisher seem to have got the basic facts right about the country and its people. The map of Iran at the beginning of the book with the stretch of water in the south of the country not being shown by its proper name, Persian Gulf, is a good evidence of the ignorance and lack of professional approach in the preparation and publication of this book. As "a picture is worth thousand words" I find this critical error a shining mirror of the publisher's lack of understanding and poor judgement, making all the praises printed on the cover of the book rather hollow and misleading.

This was an enjoyable book to read. It's a book that just goes to show how many truly interesting people there are out there on the internet. It's often a book about unbelievable coincidences and how taking a chance can take you all over the Globe. It's also a book about one man's attempt to avoid working, something I can sympathise with!

The pace of the book is good, particularly towards the end where the chapters are often only 2-3 pages long and it becomes a parade of entertaining, unusual and genuinely intriguing people. And it's definitely the people that make this book enjoyable and entertaining, rather than Gorman's need to complete this book. If anything, his constant attempts to engage our sympathy are a down point, if only a minor one.

I heard this book on Radio 4 and as a keen salsa addict, I immediately got hold of a copy. I'd like to go on a salsa holiday, and this book explained what the 'scene' is like in half-a-dozen Latin American cities

Lindop went on his own. It's really hard to turn up at bars and dance among people you've never met before. But he made contacts and organised enough lessons to get a feel for the places and people. His prose is poetic and rich, I enjoyed reading it in short bursts. There is lots of insight into the great pleasure that salsa gives: the music, the women and the movement. It works as a travelogue, and as a book about dance. You also learn a few things about an Englishman of a certain age.
