. The Rough Guide to India (Rough Guide Travel Guides)

Despite the inferior quality of the photo reproduction I've always thought that Rough Guide is better value than Lonely Planet. It is generally more informative, more erudite, and the style is arguably geared to a wider readership, while LP leans more towards backpackers and gap-year students. I also think LP is more prone to hyperbole while Rough Guide is normally unflinchingly honest about places. It's perceived negativity is for me a bonus as it is often better to travel with lower or at least realistic expectations. As it says in the opening gambit, many travellers head for India expecting to 'encounter a timeless ascetic wonderland and are surprised to find one of the most materialistic societies on the planet'. I think this is pretty spot ... Read More:

. 1421: The Year China Discovered the World
City Travel Guides > Books > Travel and Holiday
by: Gavin Menzies

You'd hope for more from a former Royal Navy commander, but sadly while his publicity machine is first rate, his history is anything but.
It would be lovely to turn what we know about naval history on its head and say that the Chinese Admiral Zheng He conclusively 'discovered' America or Australia long before any European navigators/explorers.
Unfortunately, this book falls into the category of what publishers call "wa-wa" history. In other words, it ain't true - and the historical reseach is shoddy.
The publishers know it's rubbish. We the public know it's rubbish, but we buy it anyway. And so they publish, because they know we'll buy it and they'll make money. In other words we get the books we deserve. We should be ... Read More:

. Driving Over Lemons: An Optimist in Andalucia
City Travel Guides > Books > Travel and Holiday
by: Chris Stewart

This book is so well written and witty, describing an idylic life in Spain that I am sure many will be tempted to follow in Chris's and my own footsteps. I have been through the same story as this family, having lived in Spain for the past sixteen years, longer than Chris. I speak fluent Castellano, the same as him. My warning about his book is unless you can speak Spanish perfectly, you will never enjoy half the experiences described. If you are willing to learn the language, then "Driving Over Lemmons" is so good and an inspiration. If you are inspired and are up for it then Spain is still a good choice. My advice is read the book, learn to speak Spanish, enjoy and do the same. Wonderful read and a wonderful country. I am writting this review on the PC powered ... Read More:

. Narrow Dog to Carcassonne
City Travel Guides > Books > Travel and Holiday
by: Terry Darlington
May 03, 2006
The whole time I was reading this book I was complaining to everyone who would listen about the rubbish writting style the author uses (which other reviewers have described in more detail). But I kept reading it and I'm not sure why. Some bits of it appealed to my sense of humor, such as moments when the author compares the collection of odd-balls he has just encountered to individuals one might mistakenly cast as film extras. But these moments were few and far between. There is also a lot of repetition, in terms of what the characters do each day and complain about. I am baffled by the glowing reviews that some have put for this book but I didn't think it was too bad either. If you come across it for less than a pound and just need something mildly entertaining to read ... Read More:
