. The Rough Guide Map Paris (Rough Guide Map)
City Travel Guides > Books > Travel and Holiday
by: Rough Guides
February 22, 2007
I can't believe that the best feature of this map isn't made clear in the description. It is made of polyester film, therefore it is all but indestructible. Rain, clumsy folding or stuffing into pockets/handbags will do nothing to dim the brilliance of this fine map.
A clear enough scale to read all the street names, without being too large. Also, being indestructible, it can be folded and refolded to show just the part of town you are in (or searching for!)
There are only a couple of minor gripes. Firstly, the map would be better if it extended a way further north, as only half of Montmartre is shown. Secondly, the Metro plan is too small to read easily, and covers only the city centre.
However, a pocket ... Read More:

. Argentina (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Travel and Holiday
by: Danny Palmerlee, et al
August 01, 2008
I have used Lonely Planet guides a number of times to good effect, however the Argentina guide was woefully inaccurate, resulting in a good deal of frustration. The maps are both out of date and in some cases never correct in the first place. A suggested option for tango in Buenos Aires led us into a tourist trap hell hole which ended up costing over £50 and the police getting involved. I think the book was written in 2003 and therefore is inadequate to guide a stranger.
In the end we abandonded the book and found life much easier. Argentina is a fabulous country - simply stunning. Buy another guide to avoid wasting your time there - but enjoy the place.

. World Map Wall Chart (Wall Charts)
City Travel Guides > Books > Travel and Holiday
from: Autumn Publishing Ltd
1997-12
This is the latest guide on Cape Town & surrounds to be released (Oct 08) and being the most up-to-date makes it a worthwhile purchase. However, I think a lot more could have gone into this guide and the coverage of certain key tourist areas is lacking substantially. Buy this guide but do your own research on the internet to find the best places to stay, bars, clubs and restaurants. Don't just rely on this guide for that! For less than £9 on the web it's worth having, at RRP of £12.99 it's overpriced.

. Bill Bryson African Diary
City Travel Guides > Books > Travel and Holiday
by: Bill Bryson
December 02, 2002
The phrase short and sweet popped into my mind about this 49 page little book about Bill Bryson's 8 days in Kenya. It is actually a bitter sweet account about the work of the charity organization CARE one of the worlds leading international organizations fighting against poverty. They believe that by working to find the source of a communities problems and solving it they can help make the world a safer and more stable place for us all.
Unfortunately the book is a very superficial glance into the problems that are facing Kenya poverty, war, disease and corruption. However it did its job reminding me that we should be grateful for the small things in life and appreciate the fact that there are millions of people in Africa lacking even the basics ... Read More:

. Japan (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Travel and Holiday
by: Chris Rowthorn
October 01, 2007
The Lonely Planet guide to Japan is a detailed and accesible guide to the country, providing a brief historical and cultural overview of Japanese affairs and then exploring sites of interest. The book incorporates many useful features including maps, key phrases and a comprehensive index. The book is mainly black and white but does incorporate a few colour snap shots.
At over 850 pages, the book is packed full of useful information but is also bulky and awkward to fit in a small bag meaning that most days, I left it at the hotel and relied on other books. Maps of smaller cities are helpful but I did find the Tokyo maps difficult to follow and poorly labelled. Descriptions of sites tend to be factual and informative but do not always convey an interest in the site ... Read More:

. Homicide: a Year on the Killing Streets
City Travel Guides > Books > Travel and Holiday
by: David Simon
March 31, 1993
How do you fill the void left after watching the final episode of one of the greatest tv shows of all time ? Go back to the source and that's what this is without this book there is no The Wire. It's a remarkable book and one that hasn't really dated unlike the TV series of the same name.
The premise is well described David Simon writes about a year in the life of the homicide department of Baltimore what suprised me was that it isn't written for the journalist point of view so instead we get informed what the detectives are thinking. It's hard to explain that for the veteran detectives we see that there is no personal crusade to solve the crimes it's a job and not a highly paid one so if it's not the money what compels these individuals to keep going especially when ...
