This book is very predictable - formula-written. Like it is by a committee not a person.

LP's great when you first start traveling. But now I want more information about the places that locals go to and the more unusual locations, hotels and restaurants.

With this book you know you are always with the crowd whether you want it or not.

And the cultural information is very thin and unimaginative. The only thing that is really good are the maps and the great binding.

I picked this book up when I saw it lying on a friend's coffee table and became absorbed from the first chapter, so much so I was barely able to put it down until it was finished. It is written in a humorous, fluent and self-deprecating style that provides a fascinating insight into life as an ex-pat in a remote foreign farming community. The book's worth is increased for me by it coming across as a very honest account of events naturally brought to life by the characters and their situation. Each chapter is a self-contained episode which keeps the whole thing fresh. It would seem almost impossible to write a one-volume travel book on the USA but somehow Rough Guides has managed it in style.

I would usually hesitate to spend more than £15 on a paperback but this is so detailed and well-written I find myself returning to it again and again.

These days it's probably easier to use online resources when choosing accommodation but as a pithy guide to resorts and for planning trip itineries, this Rough Guide is invaluable.

Me Talk Pretty One Day is the first Sedaris book I've read. It is a series of anecdotes and reminicences and, as such, the chapters are rather uneven. The best of them (towards the end of the book) are genuinely laugh-out-loud funny; when Seadris pulls it off he creates that magical mixture of insightfulness, charm, bitchiness and wit that makes you wish he were singing for his supper at one of your dinner parties.

Clear-eyed observation of both the eccentricities of family and friends, and the moments we all can relate to, however obliquely, is at the base of the best humour and Sedaris definitely has this.

The book is very helpful and full of useful travel titbits when travelling round Sicily, pointing out interesting features of each of the main regions and recommended places to visit. The walking tour in Palermo was excellent, and the beaches highlighted were exceptional. The restaurant recommendations were fantastic, though the great hotel we stayed in was not mentioned in the guide, despite there only being a few hotels in the town itself.

You will need, however, to supplement the book with a language guide if you do not speak Italian, as it contains only the most basic phrases, and it would be helpful to expand on these when required. This is the 3rd book in the series from Chris Stewart about his life in Spain. Although it suffers from comparisons with the previous 2 books, taken in isolation it is still a great read. It is full of humour and is an entertaining read.

I bought this book when i first booked my holiday. Read it and put it to one side. Remembered to pack it but didn't look at it again. On the way home (14 February 2008) i remembered i had it and reread it...........my goodness this lady was on our cruise ship! Absolutely everything she said happened and her tips on fighting off the persistant sellers were spot-on!!! I would TOTALLY recommend this book if you are considering a Nile cruise - but don't do what i did - buy it, read it, and take her at her word - everything she says is true. Have a fantastic holiday!

What is it about Lonely Planet? Like a rash, their guides are everywhere - sometimes in the most unwelcome of places. Nicely packaged and handy they may be, but they are often woefully inaccurate and incomplete. This is no exception. Cutting and pasting a few paragraphs about history and culture, this really skims the surface of a fascinating country, and leaves many fascinating places out. If you're a twentysomething Australian back-packer, then this book will probably make you very happy; if you're more discerning, and looking to explore the country's lesser known areas and learn more about its culture (and if you're interested in accuracy), then I would go for the infinitely better Rough Guide.

I found this book giving an equal good versus bad account. It took off my rosey sunglasses I had on regarding how Dubai works. I can now look forward to going to Dubai with eyes wide open without being made a fool off or being taken advantage of regarding things I did not know.

Like some of the other reviewers, I was disappointed that there was so much of the book devoted to the US at the expense of some truly magical places in the world.

I agree that the photography is quite old fashioned (but that's not what the book is about) and I was disappointed by the heavy bias towards fancy hotels - if you're in a fancy hotel - you could quite possibly be anywhere in the world so there's little point in travelling there! The fancy hotels that have a bit of history / literary connections are quite interesting and if I'm ever in the vicinity she might have convinced me to pop in for a (cheap!) beer.
