The previous editions (see other reviews) may have been great, but the new Sept 2006 version is a real disappointment. Just used it for 3 weeks in NZ. For years I have used Lonely Planets. They give you information. Something has gone wrong with this NZ one. Far too much is the worst sort of travel writers' gush. Far too little is the sort of info LP are otherwise justly famous for. A real shame - lets hope LP are going to quickly revise and re-write it. Meanwhile, I'd suggest checking out the alternatives.

I have lived in London a few years now, and I love being able to find the really interesting and off the wall things to do in this fab city. I bought this book for a friend, and then spent the next 2 days buried in it myself, and I started to write down ideas to take back to me. After 5 pages of my notes on the book, I decided it would be far simpler to get myself a copy!
it lists everything from places to eat, to museums you'cve probably never heard of, together with lots of free activities and it isn't expecially aimed at tourists which is refreshing. A really different take on London and I'm a big fan.

No, really, don't!
I read it yesterday during my breaks on a course I was on, but, unfortunately, did not realize for some time that the other people in the room, all strangers, were giving me some very odd looks and edging away because, totally engrossed and loving another Leader Classic I was laughing out loud, often, and loudly. Oh dear.
However, those warnings in mind, I would absolutely recommend this one. It's very short but very, very funny. Trust me. It is.

No, really, don't!

When you find yourself being directed towards motorways that do not exist in you book of maps then you know it is time to buy a new one! The AA Road Atlas does exactly what it says on the cover - super clear mapping. The town plans are useful too.

No excuse for ever getting lost in Spain again.

It woud be churlish to say that Robert Macfarlane's writing is not beautifully crafted and I wish I had his vocabulary and skill with words, but that's about as far as it goes. Much of this book seems to me to be pompous and smug. I get the impression that landsacape is a stage that Macfarlane uses to show how clever and sensitive he is. Most of the chapters have a small percentage about the so called wild place and a huge amount of pseudo intellectual background. Why he can't he just go to these places without the need to read forty books beforehand and then tell us all about them? There's also this slightly sanctimonious and quasi spiritual tone throughout - very hard to put my finger on, but it irritates me - it reminds of the writing that fills the ... Read More:

I really enjoyed the previous book, Narrow dog to Carcassone, which I read on holiday last year. I waited with bated breath, and eager anticipation for this follow up journey, which was mentioned on the last few pages. - Have just read the first two chapters, hence only three stars up to now, and so far the American adventure has not yet begun, but Terry has a "turn of phrase" that makes me chuckle out loud. Monica, his long suffering wife, is an excellent "straight woman" for Terry and his "daftness". Monica is the heroine of both tales and Jim the whippet offer the light releif. Must get back to the book now.
