. First Overland: London-Singapore by Land Rover
City Travel Guides > Books > United Kingdom
by: Tim Slessor, Sir David Attenborough, Foreword
September 27, 2005
My connection with this book is a long one as I first read it in the 1960's and I was pleased to see it back in print. One of the sponsors the trip was Brooke Bond and my late father-in-law was the Indian based representive of the company and looked after the group when they were in Delhi - their exploits are recorded in the book which includes an hilarious TV performance on Indian TV. In 1994 I brought the whole group together at Magdelene College Cambridge for a celebratory dinner at which it was intended for my father-in-law to meet up with them after 40 years but sadly he died just before the dinner took place. We pressed ahead and it was very interesting to meet all of the travellers who had not been together for many, many years. ... Read More:

. Walk the Lake District: South
City Travel Guides > Books > United Kingdom
by: Charles Davis
January 16, 2006
I have a shelf full of Lake District books but so many of them seem to have the same old routes, desribed in uninspiring terms, that I don't feel the urge to use them. Walk! The Lake District South is fresh, and although it covers some old favourites, there are plenty of new ideas for routes.I love the style of the author - he informs yet entertains at the same time. You just want to get out there! I have done 3 routes so far and intend to do the lot. The maps are adapted from OS so are good and clear, overlaid with GPS tracks and waypoints - most reassuring. I would heartily recommend this book to all lovers of the Lake District.

. The Thames Path (National Trail Guides) (National Trail Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > United Kingdom
by: David Sharp
February 25, 2007
This is an indispensable companion if walking the Thames Path, and if you are taking only one book along with you, it should be this one. Others, such as Turner's one on pubs, the National Trail Companion, and the Imray map, are helpful, but you can get along without them if you have this.
Detailed OS maps are included for every step of the way, with the relevant text on the same page. The text itself gives very clear directions, fills you in on local history and landmarks, and points out pubs and other places of refreshment. The balance is just right.
Once the Path reaches London it follows both banks of the river. Here the text usefully splits into colour-coded north and south sections, which run in parallel to each other.

. The Locals' Guide to Edinburgh
City Travel Guides > Books > United Kingdom
by: Owen O'Leary
November 30, 2007
If your going to visit Edinburgh don't even think about doing it without this guide, you'd miss so much - I actually used to live in Edinburgh for a while and I didn't know a quarter of this.
Instead of listing tons of bars and restaurants, this book picks places and things to do according to your mood. There's a great section on things to do if it's a cold day and things to do on a romantic outing, the best pubs for a quiet chat, etc etc. And the thing I really liked is that it's all written and photographed by locals - beautiful and stylish to look at too... Definite a great buy if your visiting or if you live there.

. The Eastern Fells (Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells)
City Travel Guides > Books > United Kingdom
by: Alfred Wainwright
April 30, 2005
This special edition boxed set of seven Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland must rank amongst the finest and detailed set of guide books for walkers and lovers of the Lake District, situated in Cumbria, England. The meticulous detail and minute accuracy, together with the drawings, sketches and notes make these guide books unique. Guides to the Lakeland have appeared since 1770, so these guides are therefore not original, but they are distinctive in concentrating on individual fells, over 200 of them, and are not walking tour guides. Book 1 initially starts with fells over 1400 feet, but in later books fells of over 1000 feet are included, but there is one fell included of 985 feet which is noted as a 'protuberance' rather than as a fell. The guides give ... Read More:

. Eat London: All About Food
City Travel Guides > Books > United Kingdom
by: Terence Conran, Peter Prescott
March 16, 2007
I was left dissapointed by this book which seems to assume that good food in London can only be found in affluent or trendy areas, and mostly in expensive delis or restaurants. I really felt that they missed a trick to really unearth the jems of London's food scene but opted instead for the obvious. For example, coverage for South East London is woeful, despite it being home to any number of excellent pan-asian and caribean shops and restaurants, as well as some of the best British food from great roasts, to fish and chips and pie and mash. You can only assume that the researchers didn't like the idea of Jerk Chicken in Catford. The cynic in me would also like to know how many of the establishments listed are somehow a part of the Conran empire. All in all, a bit poor, very elitist ... Read More:
