Trendy guide trying to be clever and get some blatant free publicity by unjustifiably damning some beautiful parts of Britain. I suspect the dismissive authors haven't even been to some of these places - the guide reads almost as if the authors have just gone onto Wikipedia! Avoid at all costs.

What a delight this turned out to be! Thousands of irresistably silly facts about my favourite city, served up with humour and style and with the author's love of London shining through on every page. Over the years I must have bought a hundred books on London, good, bad and indifferent, but nothing like this and I couldn't believe how much new stuff Long has uncovered. New to me, anyway, and I suspect to most other readers as well. Ten out of ten.

I've lived here all my life and always had an interest so this is probably not aimed at me. Although I did learn one or two things, I knew most already.
If I were a visitor or just beginning to look around me, though, this would be an ideal way to start. The walks are well thought out, the language engaging and I think this might inspire me to investigate more if I didn't already spend most of my time peering between the cracks in London's beautiful facades!

This is a superb book; although it has the appearance of belonging to the recently emerged sub genre of humorous and slightly outrageous travel writing, it quickly become apparent that there's far more to it than that. Maconie takes us on a selective tour of the North of England, visiting both his old haunts and other key areas, such as Liverpool, Harrogate and other parts of Yorkshire. Along the way, there are recollections of various amusing personal incidents and a stock of good one-liners, but alongside these, there's a depth of historical, cultural, political and social information and analysis, which is both well researched and convincingly argued. Well worth reading.

What a disappointment. The book rambles dreadfully. As soon as you find an interesting bit the author then goes off at a tangent and you lose the thread. I should stress that there are some good bits and some of the turns of phrase are poetic but, in the main, I found the book dull. I was glad I got it out of the library rather than bought it. Doesn't the pic on the new paperback version look fab, though? Pity the text of the 2001 hardback only has small black and white pics in it.
