The first thing I noticed about this book was the size. It fits perfectly into the map pocket of a waterproof jacket. I also like the spiral binding, no more flicking through the pages while halfway up a mountain in gale force winds!(Get the book bag to keep it waterproof.) The routes are varied and carefully graded (there really is something for everyone) and the photographs really give you a feel for the walks. The descriptions are very detailed but not dry - there's lots of local information and bits of geography to help you to work out what you can see when you stop for a rest, the OS mapping is helpful too. I bought this book about 2 weeks ago and have already spent a few happy hours daydreaming.
My husband and I are approaching our first wedding anniversary and I bought the book because I wanted to make sure we choose the right hotel for a lovely romantic weekend away. Looking at the pictures and the information I don't think we'll be dissappointed.
It's true that many of the hotels featured are on the expensive side but there are some more reasonable entries. There is even a section at the front of the book indicating which hotels are in which price bracket. Fantastic!

It's good to see the Rough Guide team updating their Ireland guide less than two years after the last edition.

The Rough Guide to Ireland got the basics right a long time ago. This has always been an in depth guide that gave the traveller the background to the country and gave detailed enough guided tours round the main sites to make buying extra little guides of them unnecessary. It has slowly improved its format from Edition to Edition. The layout is clear and easy on the eye. There are a good number of maps of main towns and sites with the information you need on them. The book is thoroughly web friendly with internet addresses for everything.

If your going to visit Edinburgh don't even think about doing it without this guide, you'd miss so much - I actually used to live in Edinburgh for a while and I didn't know a quarter of this.

Instead of listing tons of bars and restaurants, this book picks places and things to do according to your mood. There's a great section on things to do if it's a cold day and things to do on a romantic outing, the best pubs for a quiet chat, etc etc. And the thing I really liked is that it's all written and photographed by locals - beautiful and stylish to look at too... Definite a great buy if your visiting or if you live there.

When I enthusiastically read "Ali, Pele, Lillee and Me", I really liked Brian Viner. His "personal odyssey through the sporting seventies" is an absolute unrivalled triumph of unadulterated nostalgia. Viner comes across as a personable and engaging host as he describes his teenage to early twenties years. What happened, I wonder, in the ensuing time between then and now ? We now join Viner in 2002. He is now in his forties and the down-to-earth boy from Southport has become a cappuccino-loving effete "North Londoner" with all the pretensions that entails.

I really enjoyed this book. There is a spirit of adventure through it and some very well observed detail. I think that the second half is very entertaining and there are some very funny encounters.

This is a great book, with some fabulous walks lovingly described. Frank Duerden clearly loves the Lakes and loves walking. He has drawn very clear maps and provided good route decriptions - though an OS map is still useful. The book may look a little drab, but the walks are anything but drab!

I haven't had a problem with the accuracy and the usefulness of the information in this Lonely Planet guide to England. I have no complaints there. The prices and the opening times are right. The recommendations insightful and the options presented (more or less) clearly.
My only complaint is that the depth of information is quite limited and the maps don't often cover more than the very city town centre of most locations.
I can understand that the book can only be so big but really, who wants to carry around a chapter of England's history when you travel and then resort to a series of additional maps and guide information. If you're going to carry this great hunking book when you travel, take it to read as well as as your guide book and make ... Read More:
