I did the walk starting at Bethgellert and taking in Nanmor Valley and the Aberglaslyn Gorge. Long walk on a beautifully sunny day taking you off the main roads and into the heart of Snowdonia. Really special, really easy to follow, and a great adventure.

I have been a fan of the Eyewitness Travel guides for a number of years; their emphasis on a visual format (especially their cutaway diagrams of selected sights) is extremely useful, while their recommendations of restaurants, pubs, and shops have never steered me wrong. I have found this to be true time and again when I have taken it to Dublin, where the guide really opened up the city for me to explore it.

While much of the information within this guide is also contained within the larger Ireland (Eyewitness Travel Guide), it should be pointed out that they are NOT the same. The Ireland guide does contains most of the same information, but the Dublin guide provides more details and some additional sites that were left out of the ... Read More:

An engrossing trawl through the detailed, local and vernacular. If you have an interest in the fine detail of the English landscape you'll certainly find a wealth of things here to interest you, be it thatching techniques, new year ceremonies, pub names, breeds of apple or varieties of brick. Anyone who shares a house with you should be prepared to be buttonholed with a series of fascinating facts and if you have a feeling for maps you'll probably feel the need to annotate an atlas of England with things to go and look at. It would be the perfect companion for a journey across England on foot or by bike, at the sort of pace where you can see the stone, soil type and architecture changing gradually - at least, if it weren't so large, which makes ... I've just read some excerpts from '500 Mile Walkies' to a group of friends staying together in Minehead and they roared with laughter and absolutely loved it - in fact they all vociferously demanded details of where they could get the book, so MW (if you're listening) I may have upped your sales a bit! As a dog-lover and dedicated coast path walker I am devoted to this book and re-read it regularly: there's nothing that cheers me up more effectively on a cold, grey winter evening than following once again that delightful journey with Boogie.

My five stars are strictly for '500 Mile Walkies'. I agree with other reviewers that 'Boogie up the River' is much less appealing, though still a worthwhile read. The situations are contrived, the characters ... Read More:

I really enjoyed this book. There is a spirit of adventure through it and some very well observed detail. I think that the second half is very entertaining and there are some very funny encounters.

On the plus side, the Eyewitness guide is easy to read and gives you a more accurate idea of what to expect at the various attractions across Ireland, and has a decent section on Northern Ireland, which is often noticeably lacking in many other guides. However, it is VERY limited in terms of its listings of lodgings, restaurants and pubs. I bought the guide while living in my husband's native Northern Ireland on the recommendation of a friend, but found I had to continually refer to other guide books to find hotels, B&B and restaurants that normal people (those of us with incomes under $100,000/year) can afford. Also, the listing of hotels, etc., at the back of the book is rather frustrating, as you have to flip back and forth many times to determine if there's ... Read More:

This is a quote from the redoubtable Celia Fiennes in the third chapter of this book. She, like the rest of the explorers in this book, were seeing this island with new eyes, and noting that there was enough to amuse, entertain, impress and exhilarate in the countryside immediately around us.

Nicholas Crane guides us on their journeys again, and they are a eclectic lot - from a monk called Gerald trying to drum up support in the wilderness of Wales, to Gilpin who determinedly searched for the 'picturesque' in the somewhat calmer waters of the Wye. Their motivations and hardships are described in fascinating detail.
