. England in Particular: A Celebration of the Commonplace, the Local, the Vernacular and the Distinctive
City Travel Guides > Books > United Kingdom
by: Sue Clifford, Angela King
May 22, 2006
An engrossing trawl through the detailed, local and vernacular. If you have an interest in the fine detail of the English landscape you'll certainly find a wealth of things here to interest you, be it thatching techniques, new year ceremonies, pub names, breeds of apple or varieties of brick. Anyone who shares a house with you should be prepared to be buttonholed with a series of fascinating facts and if you have a feeling for maps you'll probably feel the need to annotate an atlas of England with things to go and look at. It would be the perfect companion for a journey across England on foot or by bike, at the sort of pace where you can see the stone, soil type and architecture changing gradually - at least, if it weren't so large, which ... . Riding the Retreat: Mons to the Marne 1914 Revisited
City Travel Guides > Books > United Kingdom
by: Richard Holmes
March 01, 2007
Although this is one of Richard Holmes' earliest works and now re-released, 'Riding the Retreat' remains a unique amalgam of travel book and military history of the most enjoyable, if somewhat quirky, type. As a detailed view of the opening moves of August and September 1914, I can only praise this book. Both strategy and more detailed anecdotes are supported by snippets of archival material that may already be familiar to those who are devotees of Richard Holmes' other books. The nature of the BEF, its social structure and the individual battles are brought to life as Holmes and his companions explore the battlefields in a way as never before. But what is different is the often humourous stories of this, Professor Holmes' equestrian adventure with colleagues, ... Read More:

. Connemara: Listening to the Wind (Connemara Trilogy 1)
City Travel Guides > Books > United Kingdom
by: Tim Robinson
June 19, 2007
This is an evocative, highly eclectic book about the Irish wilderness of Connemara. How best to describe it? It's part natural history, part oral history, part topographical survey of the part of Connemara near Roundstone (this forms only part of a trilogy, we are told early on). However its breadth is also its great weakness. The lack of conventional structure and meandering around several issues without conclusion might be seen as charming, but I found it profoundly irritating.
The best parts are when Tim Robinson recounts local stories, preserving in print the lore of the old, which, in a generation would otherwise be forgotten. The author has a keen ear and writes well; often it seems as if you are I a dirty homestead or before a peat fire in some ... Read More:

. Ireland (Eyewitness Travel Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > United Kingdom
by: Lisa Gerard-Sharp, Tim Perry
February 01, 2008
On the plus side, the Eyewitness guide is easy to read and gives you a more accurate idea of what to expect at the various attractions across Ireland, and has a decent section on Northern Ireland, which is often noticeably lacking in many other guides. However, it is VERY limited in terms of its listings of lodgings, restaurants and pubs. I bought the guide while living in my husband's native Northern Ireland on the recommendation of a friend, but found I had to continually refer to other guide books to find hotels, B&B and restaurants that normal people (those of us with incomes under $100,000/year) can afford. Also, the listing of hotels, etc., at the back of the book is rather frustrating, as you have to flip back and forth many times to determine if there's ... Read More:
