When I enthusiastically read "Ali, Pele, Lillee and Me", I really liked Brian Viner. His "personal odyssey through the sporting seventies" is an absolute unrivalled triumph of unadulterated nostalgia. Viner comes across as a personable and engaging host as he describes his teenage to early twenties years. What happened, I wonder, in the ensuing time between then and now ? We now join Viner in 2002. He is now in his forties and the down-to-earth boy from Southport has become a cappuccino-loving effete "North Londoner" with all the pretensions that entails.

One of my loves in life is aerial photography. The TV series was excellent so I had high hopes for the book. What a let down: how can the BBC put out such a poor product? The resolution and poor print quality does no justice to what could be great pictures. I suspect it was done to manage the publication costs, yet the book is not cheap. Avoid.

Having used this book in practice, I've always found its comments on the locations it covers quite fair and its facts reasonably accurate. Obviously, a book like this can never be as current as the Net, so when looking for somewhere to eat you're best bet is to use your own initiative when you get there rather than sticking slavishly to every word of the text. Even so, I've always found it very useful. My only criticism is that there aren't enough street names on the maps it provides, and that can cause problems.

So good I read it twice. Contrary to the previous reviewer's opinion on the 'present tense' style of writing, I find that it works extremely well with this book and serves to carry the reader along on the journey with Paul. I have no hesitation in recommending this book to anyone interested in the canla system, narrowboats or travel in general.

If you happen to be out and about around the countryside (or towns & cities), what better way to while away a couple of hours than in a cosy pub. This is THE guide to keep at hand / in your car etc. In it you'll find the most up-to-date information there is about all the best pubs to go to for real ales, wholesome pub grub, or fine dining. I've been using the Good Pub Guides for the last few years & haven't yet been disappointed by any of the featured or recommended pubs. Well worth investing in a copy as it saves you disappointing trips to mediocre pubs, or wasted journeys to a pub only to find that they don't have on offer what you're looking for (food / children's play area etc.).

It's a great idea to collect the best ridges in Scotland into one book and it turns out there isn't space for them all in this one book - the appendix lists another 40 odd (mainly climbs). The book is written with a marvelous energy and joie de vivre that really draws you in; the maps are great and the photos too. It's a lovely book. I am a walker, not a climber, and, despite the subtitle, there are many routes in here suitable for reasonably experienced hillwalkers with a good head for heights. Do the winter routes as summer walks and Creise, Ring of Steall, Aonach Eagach, Liathach and many others become accessible to us mortals.
