Without a doubt this book is something that I've been waiting to read for a long time! it is a collection of narratives and photographs from the period 1977 to the present. This book also gives a clear account of how London has changed from being a depressed, run-down and politically charged city to the cosmopolitan and modern city it has become today. After reading this book it has surprised me just how much London has changed from the run down Docklands of the 1980's and the riots in Brixton to the crumbling inner-cities that were once common place. This book is also good because it emphasizes that although many positive changes have taken place, they may not have necessarily affected all Londoners. I've always queried the concept of the Rough Guide series of books. I know there was the TV show in the 80's I think it was, where people like Magenta de Vine pretended to be down with the kids and talk about Eastern Europe on a shoestring budget, all the while looking like her Gucci slacks had never seen a hostel let alone be strewn across its floor. My question about the books was then, should I draw any link between the two brand names spanning different media?

It sort of appears that I should, because the Rough Guide isn't, as one inference might suggest, a loose approximation of information, or an author's best guess at something (i.e. Cornwall is roughly west of London and quite nice). Funny as that might be, it night not ship in ... Read More:

These maps are really useful when walking. I took this map on a Duke of Edinburgh expedition in the Peak District and it didn't stop raining. The other two maps we took fell apart, even in "waterproof" cases, but this map was brilliant and shows no signs of wear and tear.

Camping is a somewhat re-visited activity and, over the years, I'm used to 'AA' books, which are, generally, reliable and offer a list of places to troll through, so I grabbed the book off the shelf without really looking at it! Fool that I am.


Now, this is a book, right?... and you are meant to be able to read it easily, right?... OK, yes I wear 'readers' but the print is still somewhat small and the font could have been better, but my gripe is with the symbols for what each site offers...they are truly small and difficult to distinguish, especially in low light. The symbols are the key and worth a thousand words, so should be crystal! AND...what about dogs?...OK it has a symbol for 'dog exercise area', so one assumes dogs are ... Read More:

a very good atlas, good handy size, easy to read reference, and clear and up to date road/station/building points. bought this for use in the car and has not let me down. thought it might be squishy in between pages, but isnt at all.

The maps are so clear, and the book is packed with nuggets of information about the history and routes of the canals it covers. Whether you cruise, walk, cycle or just sit in an armchair and dream, this book is worth having. I found a problem with the previous edition while cruising the Welford Arm, and the publishers were so helpful, and fixed it in this edition. I love it.
