. Walk the Lake District: North
City Travel Guides > Books > United Kingdom
by: Vivienne Crow

The first thing I noticed about this book was the size. It fits perfectly into the map pocket of a waterproof jacket. I also like the spiral binding, no more flicking through the pages while halfway up a mountain in gale force winds!(Get the book bag to keep it waterproof.) The routes are varied and carefully graded (there really is something for everyone) and the photographs really give you a feel for the walks. The descriptions are very detailed but not dry - there's lots of local information and bits of geography to help you to work out what you can see when you stop for a rest, the OS mapping is helpful too. I walk in the Lakes a lot and it's so refreshing to see a different, more lively approach to route descriptions. I'm ... Read More:

. Eat London: All About Food
City Travel Guides > Books > United Kingdom
by: Terence Conran, Peter Prescott
March 16, 2007
I was left dissapointed by this book which seems to assume that good food in London can only be found in affluent or trendy areas, and mostly in expensive delis or restaurants. I really felt that they missed a trick to really unearth the jems of London's food scene but opted instead for the obvious. For example, coverage for South East London is woeful, despite it being home to any number of excellent pan-asian and caribean shops and restaurants, as well as some of the best British food from great roasts, to fish and chips and pie and mash. You can only assume that the researchers didn't like the idea of Jerk Chicken in Catford. The cynic in me would also like to know how many of the establishments listed are somehow a part of the Conran empire. ... Read More:

. The Rough Guide to Ireland
City Travel Guides > Books > United Kingdom
by: Paul Gray, Geoff Wallis
April 01, 2008
It's good to see the Rough Guide team updating their Ireland guide less than two years after the last edition.
The Rough Guide to Ireland got the basics right a long time ago. This has always been an in depth guide that gave the traveller the background to the country and gave detailed enough guided tours round the main sites to make buying extra little guides of them unnecessary. It has slowly improved its format from Edition to Edition. The layout is clear and easy on the eye. There are a good number of maps of main towns and sites with the information you need on them. The book is thoroughly web friendly with internet addresses for everything.
The Guide starts with a `Colour Section' with pictures of `33 things not ... Read More:

. London Pub Walks (Camra)
City Travel Guides > Books > United Kingdom
by: Bob Steel
February 19, 2006
I own one of the pubs listed, the George and Devonshire, in Chiswick. It is the oldest pub in Chiswick, built some time prior to 1657, and we still trade in the original building. However, Bob Steel commits the cardinal error of not checking his facts by casually stating the the pub is s '20th century re-build', which would appear to be obvious nonsense to anyone who has actually visited the place! If Bob Steel did not visit the George and Devonshire, which is Casque Mark accredited for the quality of our real ale, how many other pubs included in the book were also not visited?

. The Southern Fells (Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells)
City Travel Guides > Books > United Kingdom
by: A. Wainwright
September 14, 2007
This is an astonishingly good revision of the classic guide, which I have used for many years. If you're going to use it 'in anger' it's to be preferred to the original edition.
In a sense, Chris Jesty does himself an injustice, because his new material is spliced in so incredibly well with Wainwright's, both in style and in lettering, that it's often only when you look at the original that you realise that it actually is new material.
Also, the quality of the reproduction is excellent - better, as far as I can see, than that of the later printings of the first edition
The same comments apply to the revised 'Central Fells', and, on the strength of these excellent volumes, I have ordered the other two.
