I found the dietry information at the beginning of this book quite useful but as a person who does not eat animal-derived foods and therefore has always paid attention to this sort of information there are only so many times I can be told the same 100 fascinating facts about nutrition without my eyes rolling into the back of my head from boredom. Did you know that vitimin C is essential for human health and can be found in citrus fruits? No? Congratulations, you must be the last person on Earth not to know it. You can come out of the cupboard now and start living with the rest of us again.

The dietry stuff is just on the opening ten pages or so. Most of the book is taken up with recipies. Lordy, Miss Scarlet! What recipies! Just ... Read More:

I love Paul Gayler's cooking. I think he is a rare thing: a masterful chef, with an ability to translate his passion and experience into writing, and a humble regard for his readers. He pays immense respect to his ingredients, and his recipes, while often imaginative, sometimes extravagant, never lose sight of that. I also have his series of 'Passion for..' books, including Cheese, Potato and Vegetables, and each one is an inspiration.

I don't feel that he is particularly precious about his recipes, either, so if one or two might seem more complicated, they are also eminently adaptable. I don't agree with another reviewer that his ingredients require a trip to Borough market or a fat wallet (though those do tend to mean the same ... Read More:

Normally, I am not a great fan of cooking books without pictures (must be to do with some strange inner desire to know what the heap of mush I produced was actually supposed to look like) but this book is an exception and has become a real favourite of mine. The recipes are not overly complicated and work even if you couldn't get hold of all ingredients. Depending on how much time and effort you wish to invest, you can find simple dishes or ideas for a big and varied Indian dinner.
Vegans and non-vegans should find this a real treat!

It offers many recipes that are different and shows how to use foodstuffs that you would not really eat unless on a macrobiotic regimen. The recipes are well explained and are easy to follow. The cooking instructions are easy to follow.

I have been vegetarian for 25 years, this is the best cookery book I have seen in that time. There's lots for vegans too. From Greece to Japan, all very clear recipes with amusing and interesting comments from Madhur....I really can't recommend it enough, if you're new to vegetarian/ vegan cookery this is the best book to buy!!!

1. Delicious, reliable and easy-to-follow
2. Completely banished my meat-cravings
3. A very good book for Ayurvedic cooking

This book is full of delicious recipies, some traditional, some unusual but all completely reliable. All of the twenty or so that I have tried so far have been exceptional, requiring no tinkering at all, which is a minor miracle as I am a novice cook. In fact, at the second meal I have ever cooked for guests (broccoli soup, tofu in coconut milk and baked pears) I was asked how long I had been cooking! It was even more amazing considering the first meal had been the week before!

I love this book - every recipe I have made has worked. Having repeatedly borrowed it from the library I tried to buy a copy without success - until now, with this lovely new paperback edition. She seems to have come up with many ideas that I have not seen elsewhere - very refreshing. Also, many recipes are for two people which avoids having to scale everything down - although she must have a bigger appetite than I have! There are no pictures of the food; instead there are vibrant fruit and vegetable ink paintings. I wouldn't have minded fewer of these but it's a small quible and better than nothing at all. It is one of the few books that I actually cook from out of my embarassingly large collection of vegetarian cookery books.
