I have treasured these books since childhood, luckily for me my first child is approaching the age where I can read them to him. I still remember being totally captivated by the characters and stories - in the way Harry Potter has for a new generation. Like the Potter, these books chronicle the ancient battle of good versus evil - and how the choices we make for ourselves can influence the outcome. And what stories! I know there has been a film, but refused to watch it on the grounds that these stories should be read in order, and the film appeared to jump right in at the middle. I cannot recommend these books highly enough.

This book can be very heavy going at times and all the extra notes are put at the end of chapters so you constantly have to flick back and forth- sometimes just to find a pointless reference- nearly 150 times in some chapters! Hopefully this will change in the next edition!

Additionally some of the chapters are written filled with pointlessly complex words and quite frankly written in quite a dull fashion. I am not an unintellectual person, I just resent texts unnecessarily making studying even more long-winded.

On the plus side, the writers include much relevant up-to-date material, cross-reference and theorise well, are often quoted in other academics work and obviously know their stuff.

As a mental health student nurse studying for a BSc (hons) Degree, there are two areas that I continually struggle with day in and day out, the first is medication and the second is the Mental Health Act 1983, can you imagine the confusion when the Amended Mental Health Act 2007 came out. This book has been really good for me as it not only includes the full mental health act but also the amendments from 2007. also, this book includes mental capacity act. Basically, it has everything you need to help you plough through the current legislation in preparation for the 2007 act implementation in October.
