. The First Day on the Somme: 1 July 1916 (Penguin History)
City Travel Guides > Books > Wars- Battles and Campaigns
by: Martin Middlebrook
May 28, 1992
I visited the Somme battlefields for the first time this year and used an excellent walking guide, "Walking the Somme" by Paul Reed. Reed's book works well if you are physically standing on the ground but in terms of style and content Martin Middlebrook's book is excellent for those who want a detailed and highly readable account of the first day of this famous battle.
The book contains much more than just a description of the first day of the battle of the Somme. A lot of detail is given to the men, their different backgrounds and the lives of the survivors after the war. It also describes the circumstances that led to the formation of Kitchener's "New Army" and provides an excellent analysis of the events leading up to the battle.

. The Most Dangerous Enemy: A History of the Battle of Britain
City Travel Guides > Books > Wars- Battles and Campaigns
by: Stephen Bungay
September 27, 2001
This book is simply amazing. The first chapters describe the development of machines and tactics that later on played important part during the Battle. It makes the whole book much easier to understand. From Home Chain to fighter planes, from vic formation to German tactics - it gives you lots of details. Later on the author describes the actual combat action, aims, targets etc. In later chapters you will find info about accuracy and effectiveness of pilots. It shows how aces differed from regular pilots.
At the same time it is a book that you will be reading very quickly and still wanting to go a little further. There's no time for boredom.
The book is a general description of events of the summer of 1940. Dont look in it for a detailed information ... Read More:

. Betty's Wartime Diary 1939-1945
City Travel Guides > Books > Wars- Battles and Campaigns
by: Betty Armitage
July 05, 2002
I was so disappointed with this book, somehow to me it just doesnt ring true that this was written by a middle aged woman in war time, I would be interested how much of the authors slant was put on the originals diaries, everything is very much glossed over and the fact that in the introduction the author states that most of the original diaries are now unavailable, left me wondering... If you want a thoroughly good read of war time diaries look no further than the three books by Simon Garfield based on the Mass Observation Probject, they are absolutely superb and I think that is what has left me wanting more in this publication, oh well!

. Operation Certain Death
City Travel Guides > Books > Wars- Battles and Campaigns
by: Damien Lewis
May 26, 2005
I'm currently reading Damien Lewis's book 'Bloody Heroes' and this is the book that influenced me to get 'Bloody Heroes'. The writing by Damien lewis is utterly compelling and audastic, he captures the sheer horror of being captured and held hostage to the adreniline fueled assault on the rebels base by a SAS/SBS force. Recommend this book and I also reccomend 'Bloody Heroes' By the same author.

. 1914-1918: The History of the First World War
City Travel Guides > Books > Wars- Battles and Campaigns
by: David Stevenson
September 01, 2005
This was the first serious book on WWI that I read. It should be made clear, as I think another reviewer bemoans, that this is not a chronological military history, but rather a 'meta'-historical account that examines the war from various perspectives running orthogonal to the timeline. So we come to understand the social, economic, industrial and political dimensions of the war.
I give it five stars because it exploded so many of the pre-conceptions I had held about the war. In the 60s & 70s when I was doing my O-level history at school the wisdom imparted was that WWI was a misery inflicted upon the masses by an uncaring ruling class. I now understand that none of the belligerent populations (with the complex exception of Russia) would have tolerated capitulation ... Read More:

. Sog: The Secret Wars of America's Commandos in Vietnam
City Travel Guides > Books > Wars- Battles and Campaigns
by: John Plaster
1998-07
firstly, just buy this book and read it you will not be dissapointed.
this book details many missions that the sog went on during the vietnam war, and one thing that gets you almost immediately was the sheer loss of life that these units experienced. the missions they went on were virtual suicide missions. they knew they would have contact with the enemy as soon as they had been inserted, they knew there was a mole in saigon relaying their mission details to hanoi, and they knew they would be persued constantly while they were in cambodia and laos, yet they still went on the missions. this book is gripping, if you can cope with the many deaths described in the book.
excellent read, not glorified or gung ho at all.
