I'm a 6th form student, and using this book is such a life saver. Anything I'm atudying in school, I look in the index, find it in the book and I am provided with, knowledge facts and figures and everything else that I need.

I bought this as a stocking filler for my son when he was 12. He thought it was very amusing, because of the language, but it also prompted discussion over how things were then, and how they have changed. Provides a more lively insight into the effect of war in England, such as beer being weaker than in peacetime, and the price of whiskey going up to $[...] a bottle!

At his request, I have now ordered other books in the series: the American Guide to Australia and the British Serviceman in France, along with the Home Guard Manual.

The action starts on the very first page with the sinking of an Atlantic liner and from there we are led, via Casablanca, to the martialling yards of a German controlled railway terminus, para drops, return to UK by MTB, SOE training, para drop back into France the evening before D Day. Hardly a moment's rest!
Well controlled writing then covers the killing of the local Gestapo Colonel to the largest fixed battle ever undertaken by the French Resistance followed by an intensive period of escape and evasion.
Compelling actions and compelling writing from the very first page makes this reviewer wonder if others have openend the book. Or, if so, they have another agenda behind their reviews of what Professor MRD Foot has described as one ... Read More:

I bought this book because I wanted to find out more about Mengele's wartime activities and the efforts to locate him after the war. This book succeeds perfectly in the latter but fails in the former. We are given a lightening fast summary of Mengele's wartime activies, with very little examples or witness statements or indeed much in the way of exploration of the man's psyche. Then we have a beautifully researched and well-written account of his every movement postwar. This book feels unbalanced. For this reason alone only 3 stars. Surely developing the character of Mengele the Auschwitz doctor would only have strengthened our interest in the hunt for Mengele the war criminal fugitive?

has a non biased view and an excellent amount of information in here with many activities for a-level students

however if there was to be a 2nd addition there would need to be some colour and some breaks in the paragraphs because much of chris's excellent views and information aren't poitned out so clearly

Kim Phuc was 9 on 8 june 1972 when her village was napalm bombed by South Vietnamese planes on the orders of the Americans.Many of the villagers of Trang Bang were killed or injured one of whom Kim Phuc had all her clothes burnt and her severely burned.She was photographed running naked away from the flames and became known as "the girl in thw picture" This picture and 2 others of seperate incidents fully documented the horrors and barbarity of war. Kims story is well written documenting her life in Vietnam,Germany, Russia,Cuba and eventuallyCanada where she sought asylum.Although she was well treated she was ruthlessly exploited for propaganda purposes.The central government treated her well but there was much jealousy from local officials.Abook to be recommended.

This book is not a history of warfare at all, but a political-military treatise, heavily biased to a single point of view. However, it is an interesting read and also thought-provoking - so I gave it 2-stars.


Keegan makes a range of claims in this book which are fundamentally incorrect. Three such lines of argument are discussed below, but there are many others and I wonder if Keegan has even misinterpreted some of the 'facts' he suggests about tribal warfare in South America.

1. He claims that there is no Clausewitzian way of interpreting, or applying, nuclear force. Nuclear force is applied to give weight to political and military bargaining. The threat of use provides its power. In the case of the Cold War, the East-West military balance ... Read More:
