. Blighty: British Society in the Era of the Great War
City Travel Guides > Books > Wars- Battles and Campaigns
by: Gerard J. De Groot
June 21, 1996
Gerard J. De Groot's, "Blighty" stands out amongst histories of the Great War from the British perspective. In it he tells the story of how the war affected much more than that relatively narrow strip of land called the Western Front and relates the impact it had upon British society as a whole. The book sheds new light on many strongly held beliefs about the war, such as that most women worked in the munitions factories. In fact, the largest source of employment for female labour remaine domestic service despite the massive increase in armaments production. But this is to pick out only one very small element within a huge subject. In this respect this book stands with Trevor Wilson's, "The Myriad Faces of War", ambitious ... Read More:

. Target Basra
City Travel Guides > Books > Wars- Battles and Campaigns
by: Mike Rossiter
July 14, 2008
I found this book ok, if nothing special, when it stuck to describing the small part of the invasion of Iraq it covers. However, I felt it was let down by clunky writing and digressions into poor quality analysis. At times the author attempts to examine the wider historical and political context. This is done in a weak and shallow manner, passing off opionions as facts and not discussing counter arguments.
There are much better books on the Iraq conflict available.

. Major and Mrs.Holt's Battlefield Guide to Ypres Salient (Major & Mrs Holt's Battlefield Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Wars- Battles and Campaigns
by: Tonie Holt, Valmai Holt
February 14, 1997
Entering the busy, teeming Ypres (Ieper, as we have it) through the Menin Gate (de Menenpoort), any visitor will involuntarily believe the cosy old city has retained its erstwhile elegance unimpaired. By 1917 the Ypres as Edmund Blunden saw it, had been reduced to smithereens. What remained was an eerie, godforsaken 'catacombed sepulchre', a spectre of a place the rare remnants of which appeared to him 'so evidently, but impossibly' medieval. If anything, the place conjures up all the obvious reminiscences of Flanders' glorious Middle Ages, and first-time visitors will stare their eyes out here as they do in, say, Bruges or Ghent or Lille. But there's one large but. As much as the surrounding region the present-day Ypres is a reconstruction. ... Read More:

. The Germans in Normandy
City Travel Guides > Books > Wars- Battles and Campaigns
by: Richard Hargreaves
September 21, 2006
As a professional battlefield Guide I am always searching for information on the German `enemy' as too often history (as ever) is told by the victors. This is a very good addition to the view from the other side and gives a comprehensive insight into tactical and operational considerations in Normandy (strategic being necessarily a matter for Berlin).
The main focus is on the situation in 1944 and as well as including many invaluable personal accounts of individual soldiers, gives us the command problems of the senior officers. The fallacy that the Atlantic Wall could be adequatly defended by second rate garrison troops when a key component of the defence plan was to deny the landings on the beaches, is clearly shown in the frustrations of the local commanders. That the German ... Read More:

. Instructions for American Servicemen in Britain, 1942: Reproduced from the Original Typescript, War Department, Washington, DC (Instructions for Servicemen)
City Travel Guides > Books > Wars- Battles and Campaigns
by: Bodleian Library
September 01, 2004
I bought this as a stocking filler for my son when he was 12. He thought it was very amusing, because of the language, but it also prompted discussion over how things were then, and how they have changed. Provides a more lively insight into the effect of war in England, such as beer being weaker than in peacetime, and the price of whiskey going up to $[...] a bottle!
At his request, I have now ordered other books in the series: the American Guide to Australia and the British Serviceman in France, along with the Home Guard Manual.

. Churchill, Hitler and the Unnecessary War: How Britain Lost Its Empire and the West Lost the World
City Travel Guides > Books > Wars- Battles and Campaigns
by: Patrick J. Buchanan
May 13, 2008
When I read this book I realized I had been brought up on half-truths by people peddling the myth that fighting WWII was the best thing Britain ever did.
Buchanan's argument is that our we were led to war by a small number of warmongers (including Churchill), some strategic and tactical diplomatic blunders, and a failure to see how bad were the consequences of the path we were choosing.
Before you say, "That's preposterous, it's an insult to the pride of our nation and our war heroes", try to give it a go with an open mind. Most of us non-historians know little about the war except what our parents told us, popular opinion, and perhaps an official history book approved for use in schools but we think we know enough to conclude that a "revisionist book" has nothing to teach ...
