It starts long before the campaign and ends much more later on.
It lefts no stone unturned, and actually uses all the data available in a tour de force of rigour.
Actually if you are not going to read more then a book about it this one will do perfectly the job.
It is neither pro-Custer or anti-Custer, makes a good job of simply saying what is known and formulating the best plausible guesses when explaining the parts of the fight harder to establish (there other authors are perhaps much more passionate in their arguments!).
Highly Recommended for what it is fair History without undue passion.

Put quite simply, if you're visiting The Somme, please take this book with you. My visit was made all the better thanks to this little gem. It won't allow you to miss a thing and gives teriffic background on the places you'll visit.
While standing in Cemeteries containing over 5,000 graves you'll certainly shed a tear or two so take plenty of tissues! The whole Somme region is a huge burial ground and cemeteries and memorials appear from nowhere everywhere you look. When you come across one simply stop your car, take out this book, and you'll be able to read all about the memorial that stands before you.
My wife and I will certainly visit this very moving area of France again and this superb book will accompany us again ... Read More:

Brigadier Ben Barry's account of commanding the Second Battalion Light Infantry, describes life as part of an international peace keeping force in Bosnia in the mid 1990s. Accounts of mine clearing, driving on narrow, icy, precipitous and fog-bound roads, creating HQ's in makeshift buildings, all make for fascinating reading for both the modern historian and a more general readership.

Ben Barry's role was to maintain the morale and efficiency of a large number of British soldiers while they policed hostile factions who harboured deep hatred for each other. If we ever forget that there are no depths to human depravity then we will always stand on the brink of actions described in this book. The common perception is that the acts were in direct consequense and "pay back" for what happened in the east. What this book brings clearly to light is that people can not be held responsible for a crime because they have a genetic link to the perpitrators and although it is young men who do the most of the fighting in wars it is everyone else who has to do the suffering. An excellent book that teaches history as if it were an adventure. Yes its a brief view but packs so much punch. Edward 3rd, Henry V, the Black Prince, Crecy, Agincourt, Poitiers and so much more. Speaks many volumes as to the growth of the two main protagonists interwoven with peoples whose identity has long been engulfed by modern geography.

I studied history but now I'm just looking for straight forward enjoyable narrative history. This is a well researched, well written book. However, I'm finding it very hard to work my way through, and often I've read a whole page without paying any attention to it as it is so dense and detailed. I would recommend this book if you are studying this at university, but if you want some bedside reading, think twice about it. The section on resistance is very good though.

After reading many books on the Airborne this books stands out way ahead of the rest.
It makes you feel that you are there in the thick of it.

Just gets better every time I read it.

The remaning books in the collection are also very good.

I heard Peter Hart being interviewed about his new book "1918" on RTÉ radio a few of weeks ago and made a mental note to watch out for it the next time I was in a bookshop. Hart in the interview described the end of the war as a savage time and how even in victory, the British suffered enormous casualties - life was indeed cheap.

This book starts out well and gets better and better. Hart makes no apologies for labelling the book "A very British victory" though a more accurate title might have been "A very British victory (with a little help from our French, Canadian, Australian, and American friends)". One minor critique - though the maps are excellent and useful, there are many references to locations not shown on the maps and it can be sometimes hard to figure ... Read More:
