I am always a little reluctant to buy books that claim to be a "new history" of events that were well recorded and happened some 370 years ago. English history lacks bite, a dull procession of uninspired monarchs and a frenzy of Empire building. The Civil War seemed more a squabble, relatively small armies and minor engagements. Brought up in the West Country, the ruins of Corfe Castle and siege at Sherborne vaguely linked me to Cromwell, the man with warts, with no more than a hazy school history to call on.

This book is, in my view, a laymans educational diary re the events of 1967 (hope that date is correct). An easy read with a sobering dose of reality. The author gives what appears to me, to be a 'normal' persons view of the conflict, too young to fully understand the enormity of the risk he was taking, Christopher Ronnau plunged himself into the depths of one of the most horrific situations a person can face and by sheer chance emerged alive, if only just, at the other side. Take this book on holiday, on the train, or to bed for an hour each night, but find the time to read it; it won't change your life, but may alter some of your preconceived views, if only a little. Put quite simply, if you're visiting The Somme, please take this book with you. My visit was made all the better thanks to this little gem. It won't allow you to miss a thing and gives teriffic background on the places you'll visit.
While standing in Cemeteries containing over 5,000 graves you'll certainly shed a tear or two so take plenty of tissues! The whole Somme region is a huge burial ground and cemeteries and memorials appear from nowhere everywhere you look. When you come across one simply stop your car, take out this book, and you'll be able to read all about the memorial that stands before you.
My wife and I will certainly visit this very moving area of France again and this superb book will accompany us again as we tour The Somme's ... Read More:

This book is a rather lofty tome, but worth the read. It deals with the awful betrayal of the Polish Resistance, not only by the Soviet forces, but by the allies in the West. As someone who has a passion for all things historical I was aware of the Warsaw uprising, but I learnt so much more from this book. I knew about the fact the Soviets had waited for the Poles to exhaust themselves in the fight against the Wehrmacht, but I had no idea about the betrayal perpetrated in the the UK and US.

This book is rather weighty in places, and I found it hard going at times. However, I would recommend that you stick with it as the end result for the reader is not just a knowledge of events in Warsaw, but events that followed the war.

The first thing that should strike the reader is that the work is over 25 years old yet still has a freshness about its approach to the conflict. This and the comprehensive coverage of events leading up to the war, as well as the war itself, suggests it will be many more years before it ceases to be the definitive history of the Boer War. One particularly interesting feature is Pakenham's defence of General Buller who has been vilified for his incompetence in just about every other book on the subject. Not everyone will agree with Pakenham's defence of Buller but it's undoubtedly well argued, based as it is on documents and other material discovered at Buller's family home in Devon. A must read for anyone with an interest in the Boer War.
