This is the wartime diaries of the countess of Ranfulry, who when women were sent back to england during the second world was because they could not be with their husbands, the countess decided that she would 'work' her way through the war. This backdrop provides the reader with some amazing and first hand insights of the second world war.
She works with churchhill and Eisenhower, and the diaries reflect the time and place that simply does not exist in any other book I have read. If you are studying or are interested in world war two in any way then you could do no better than to read this book.

Great book in every respect. Easy to pick up and read as the chapters are quite small. Really opened my eyes to what kinds of technology was around at that point. The electromagnetic Vampire part was fantastic. Lots of interesting questions are raised by the book, which prompts me to fnd out more.

This is arguably the best-presented collection of Anglo-Saxon prose and poetry in a single book, expertly and masterfully translated by the author. Includes Beowulf, The Seafarer, The Wanderer, The Battle of Maldon, Bede, Caedmon..with lively commentaries, making Anglo-Saxon culture easily accessible to the reader. This is a cherry-picking of the top items of the literature. For those purists and language-lovers like me, it lacks the side-by-side Anglo-Saxon versions of the texts.
Perhaps there will be another Vol 2 which provides this?

Having previously read 'My Year in Iraq' by Bremer and 'Imperial Life in the Emerald City' by Chandrasekaran, I found this to be the perfect third read. Ricks, in some detail, exposes the phoney premise for doing to war and then the continued arrogance and incompetence of the American leadership in the first couple of years of the occupation. The book looks at the subject from an American standpoint and in places is hard hitting, certainly the reputational legacies of Bush, Wolfowitz and Rumsfeld et al are left in tatters... Somewhat dry in places but essential reading for anyone looking to understand the Middle East...

This book captures the words that have changed history. And contrary to some senator's beliefs, this country is still obviously run by the people. That is WHY polls are important. Yes, of course laws have been broken, lies told, deceit laid upon the people, but what is new? Are we so much more advanced than the people who wrote the original words in this book were? Or would we like to think we are superior? If sex, lies, and videotapes were such a derogatory issue, then Presidents would be removed from office for it. Maybe senators should realize that they should keep in touch with the people and garner the power of the people. I think I would rather have read a long introduction by Beevor or whoever, and then a proper collection of Grossman's articles - rather than a series of fragments inserted into a narrative history of the War on the Eastern Front written not by Grossman but by Beevor. Maybe this is because Beevor assumes that the reader just won't know the history; even so it's annoying way to handle it.

That said, Grossman is a very interesting and sympathetic character, and there's nothing wrong with Beevor's narrative either. I was very moved both by the enormous privation and sacrifices of some Red Army soldiers - and the powerful contrasts between those who were prepared to sacrifice and suffer, and those who seem to have happily deserted and then "un-deserted" back.
