The best yet biography of Hitler, discussing in extent the first years of his life. Presents theories of how his ideas were formed backing them or dismissing them with extensive bibliography research. Even though the crucial matter on how and when his ideas were formulated is not definitely answered it is the best effort on summarising the available data up to date. Reccomended to the serious in depth researcher, with excellent notes for further reading.

Alison Weir's very readable account of the origin and the first phase of the Wars of the Roses focuses, on her own admission, on the personalities and the characters of the two sides to the conflict. In doing so, she creates an interesting story, with a quite detailed historical narrative. Although some have criticised her strong bias towards the House of York, this never overwhelms the narrative, and it is surely quite permissible for an author to have a bias in a popular work of this kind.

She gives only occasional brief asides that reflect on the social, economic and political issues as stake, as well as the military innovations and tactics. As an introduction to the Wars of the Roses, this is probably a good enough place to start, ... Read More:

Appian's account of the Roman Civil Wars seems to be a much ignored text. He wasn't a witness to the events like Caesar, and he wasn't a great biographical writer like Plutarch. Yet his work stands as the only unbroken account of the years 133 to 70 BC, making his history a rather special one.

The book doesn't end in 70 BC, but rather it covers everything to the defeat of Sextus Pompeius, Pompey Magnus's son. Along the way Appian describes the revolt of Spartacus, the Catiline conspiracy, the rise and fall of the First Triumvirate, Julius Caesar's crossing of the Rubicon, and the rise of the Second Triumvirate and the terrible proscriptions that followed.

This book is truly exceptional. An original. Just read it and digest this man's irresitable logic. Goldhagen is a genius. He has married the science of history to those of psychoanalysis and psychiatry.

What is clever about this book is how he makes the reader start thinking about the subject afresh from an analytical view point. Those without some background in psychiatry will have difficulty in accepting Goldhagen's descriptions of the delusions that underlay the actions of Germans and other Jew haters. The very concept of delusion is one that most people are ignorant of or if they are aware of will only ascribe to the obviously mentally ill. I was a little nervous when going to read about a German SS officer,going into the French Foreign Legion to fight the Viet Minh,before the Americans entered the fray.It had me hooked from page one!The author,Hans Wegemuller describes his combat experiences in the final days of World War 2,and he with his comrades-in-arms fighting the new enemy in French Indo China,before it became Vietnam many years later.He's an interesting character.Totally ruthless when so desired,but also a warm,and decent human being too.That took me by suprise,as I've read many accounts of the SS in battle,as being really cruel enemies.I'm pleased that I've got this book.Its a timeless read,and I'm desperately trying to get the second book!

We are very fortunate that this anonymous woman kept a diary of the terrible events that happened to her and many other German women living in berlin at the end of WWII,because otherwise this is a part of history that would forever remain hushed up.
The author writed with total honesty and clarity,without any self pity and even with a touch of black humour.This is a really fascinating diary written using the authors journalistic talent.It's a shame she never received the credit she deserved for this important piece of history within her lifetime.

For a book as compact as this, Howard does quite an enviable task of outlining the 'Great War' (as it was know to it's combatants). In fact, calling it an outline, or indeed 'very short', does it a minor disservice. Howard doesn't leave anything substantial out or waste any pages with discussion of the trivial. The end impression given is of a historian trying to let the grand events speak for themselves.

After reading the book I felt not only that it had given me a better grasp of the chronology and general outline of the war, but also answers to some of the key questions.
Why, despite the fact that only 10 years earlier war with France (again) seemed the likelier, conflict with Germany was eventually unavoidable given the clumsy diplomacy of Bismark's successors. ... Read More:

Finally a book that tells the story of the remarkable women nurses in WW2. From the first page the reader is immediately transported to the world that these women were part of. From their nursing training to the weird and wonderful details of their uniform.

If you think you know what nurses such as these did in WW2, then think again. The horrors they endured and the terrible situations they found themselves in will shock the reader and leave you with nothing but admiration for their spirit and bravery.

The book has plenty of quotes and paragraphs from the women themselves, and/or diary entries from that time. A few of the women are featured throughout the book, and the reader will find themselves taken vividly back to that time and seeing it all through the nurses' eyes ... Read More:

Before i write this revew i have to say that i am a modern warfare fanatic and have read books like 'Black Hawk Down' by Mark Bowden,'Bravo Two Zero' by Andy Mcnab,'3Para' by Patrick Bishop and Countless other Fictional Books by Andy Mcnab and Chris Ryan, anyway get to the point this book is one of the best of them and probally equally gripping as 'Black hawk down' when i first read this book i thought he was downright over confident but at the end I truelly beleaved he had the right to be confident seeing as he survived Terrible Conditions,No food,No water (apart from little amounts and some that had nuclear waste in it) and the end i thought how in earth did he survive just how i felt about some of the people involved in Black Hawk down

The trouble with reading too many books about our dark periods of history is the lowering effect it can have on the rest of ones life. Loved ones become accustomed to lectures over breakfast on the iniquities of Nazi Germany. Squabbling children are reminded about the consequences of unbridled human aggression. Family shopping trips are punctuated by laments on the consumerist nature of today's culture. After a literary diet of "Auschwitz" and "Their Darkest Hour", it's back to the Moomintrolls and Clive James for me. That or I'll find myself banished to the Sunnydays asylum for over-serious wives and mothers.

But I digress. "Their Darkest Hour" is a fine piece of work and a very necessary read for anyone trying to understand the lessons that a conflict like WWII might teach us. Rees ... Read More:
