. Betty's Wartime Diary 1939-1945
City Travel Guides > Books > Wars- Battles and Campaigns
by: Betty Armitage
July 05, 2002
I was so disappointed with this book, somehow to me it just doesnt ring true that this was written by a middle aged woman in war time, I would be interested how much of the authors slant was put on the originals diaries, everything is very much glossed over and the fact that in the introduction the author states that most of the original diaries are now unavailable, left me wondering... If you want a thoroughly good read of war time diaries look no further than the three books by Simon Garfield based on the Mass Observation Probject, they are absolutely superb and I think that is what has left me wanting more in this publication, oh well!

. On a Wing and a Prayer: The Untold Story of the Pioneering Aviation Heroes of WW1, in Their Own Words
City Travel Guides > Books > Wars- Battles and Campaigns
by: Joshua Levine
May 06, 2008
If you are newcomer to Britain's flying services during the First World War, this book is a must. If you know your way around the subject already, then it will still surprise, inform and entertain you nonetheless.
Mr Levine does to the flying services in the Great War what Patrick Bishop did to Fighter and Bomber Commands in the Second World War. Superbly structured, very well written, and obviously intricately researched, the book guides you around the subject of air fighting over the Western Front and the Home Front with ease. The history of the flying services is intertwined with the history of the men who flew and serviced the aircraft. I have never seen training covered in anywhere near such detail before (an entire chapter), and ... Read More:

. The Perfect Summer: Dancing into Shadow in 1911
City Travel Guides > Books > Wars- Battles and Campaigns
by: Juliet Nicolson
July 12, 2007
What a pity the author spent so long skimming the froth and gave us not quite enough of the absorbing layer beneath. The subject chosen was of great interest, yet I came away unsatisfied from the feast and irritated by the frequent presumptions of what the characters may have been thinking as history unfolded around them. How to know? Does it matter? There are also inaccuracies that should have been edited carefully; for example Grand Duchess Augusta of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was Queen Mary's aunt, not great-aunt, being the sister of her mother, 'Fat Mary', and, as far as I know, always lived in Germany, not Austria. She died in Neustrelitz in 1916.
However, the book has its charms and gives us some background details we may be hearing for the ... Read More:

. Dear Mom: a Sniper's Vietnam
City Travel Guides > Books > Wars- Battles and Campaigns
by: Joseph T. Ward
1991-10
having read a few books about the vietnam war. this book is a great read, it makes you want to keep reading until you have finished. the beginning of the book is a bit slow in the marine core training camp, but it gives you an interesting insight. the rest of the book is fantastic, you can almost imagine being there and sniping yourself. the style is also refreshing, you read a letter home to his mom, then he tells the story about what actually happened and you realise all the parts he omitted, and the horrors that no one would be able to send home to their mom in a letter.
so summing up excellent read just buy it, you wont be dissapointed.

. The Second World War
City Travel Guides > Books > Wars- Battles and Campaigns
by: Sir Winston S. Churchill
January 03, 2002
Literary quality of Winston Churchill it's impossible to judge for me, as English, it's clear, isn't my mother tongue.
Only I can say Sir Winston, who had to know all facts about WW II, exposes in this book things that films of Hollywood, a main source of knowledge for people who not lived the war, never or almost have treated. Persia, the Balkans, Iraq, Greece, Gibraltar, inner problems in of British politics are episodes practically never seen in screen or even in other books.
Sir Winston had to be prudent, and I think his criteria about Spanish Civil War is debatable as the attitude of France and Britain of arms embargo to the Spanish Republic. He was divided between two opinions, but was mostly conservative and must of all he didn't wanted a communist ... Read More:
