I've always found it fascinating to imagine how a comic book author/illustrator creates the stories and images that appeal so much. Having been a non-fiction book author for many years, I have a firm understanding of the writing process. I sometimes pick out a few illustrations to put into a book.

But building a story around the illustrations, that seems like a trip to the planet Neptune to me. I was very pleased to find that Scott McCloud is very good at explaining (and illustrating) the creative and production processes he uses. I was delighted when I realized that he had also described how an individual could make a few comics to share with friends.

If you're looking for a way to explore Spain from within your own house then this book is key. It provides a surprisingly in depth, if a little mistake-ridden (publishing deadline closed in too quickly?) work full of incredible detail, although never boring. It takes you through most aspects of Spanish life from the Catalans to the PP. A great buy, if you're really interested, but not ideal to 'dip' into.

I used this book for a school report and although I had about 7 other books, I mainly used this one. It discussed all of the main trends in Chinese History and well as having pictures and little "focus" pages, which specialized in topics cruical to each era.
I think it was a great book also after since it was easy to read and understand. It was by no means difficult to read, but at a perfect level for discussing topics. A very good book!

I recently bought this book from Amazon.co.uk and I can say that it is well worth a read. I know that there are loads of memoirs out there from soliders fighting in the various allied armies, but I jumped at a chance to read a book from the frequently under-represented German persepctive.

The author writes very well and I felt that he was able to portray the sheer terror of fighting on the Eastern front very well. One engagement in the early part of the book really had me on the edge of my seat as I wondered how they would repel an attack frmo Soviet armour without any ATG's etc.

Great book, great author, great read.

The study of war literature does not end with Fussell. Things went on in the Anglospeaking world and elsewhere. Now there are many essays on war and literature, some with sounder judgements on single authors and books, though probably not as well written as The Great War and Modern Memory. However, no one can deny the simple fact that we wouldn't be discussing the issue of war and literature hadn't Fussell published this essay in the 1970s.

Having said that, I'd like to point out what aspects of the book are dated, since other readers have listed its merits.

Muhammad Yunus is obviously a brilliant man and the work he has been involved with in Bangladesh is impressive. I was familiar with his work with Grameen Bank before I read this book but had not read any of his other books.

This book is written in an easy to read style and is mostly Yunus' personal manifesto for ending poverty in the world. I suspect if you have read his other book then there will be quite a lot of repetition in this one.

The book seems to be mostly based around four themes.

1. The Grameen Bannk and related companies and their success (mainly) as a tool to empower poor women and allow them and their families to escape poverty in Bangladesh.

The first time I read this book I coudlnt put it down (Apart from two incidents described that made me feel sick and forced me to close it). I have just finished reading it for the second time and although I still find it a great read I couldnt help feel parts of it were poorly written. Perhaps this is beacuse this isn't the full version translated from the german original or its just down to the skill of the author. In parts it reads like extremely grim fiction (almost cliche) rather than a first hand account of the front line and gives the feeling that the author has taken a few liberties here and there. In this outstanding book, Professor Bayly studies the world crises of 1776-1820 and 1848-65, and the great acceleration of 1890-1914, when imperial rivalries, industrialisation and urbanisation really took off.
