. The Crusades Through Arab Eyes (Saqi Essentials)
City Travel Guides > Books > World History
from: Saqi Books
February 17, 2001
This book highlights the dangers inherent in journalists writing history. The author has a lively style and the book is ceratinly readable (one previous reviewer even fooled into thinking it's a novel!) but it is very poor as history. It lacks objectivity and although presents us with a very interesting account of events from the Arab point of view and is critical of the Muslim states and their inability to work together, displays the author's ignorance (or deliberate lack of interest in) their opponents. Western authors have been writing more balanced views of the religious wars in the middle east for some time as any serious student of mediaeval history is well aware and this books pretensions at presenting 'the other side' is disingenuous. ... . The Reign of Elizabeth: England, 1558-1603 (SHP Advanced History Core Texts)
City Travel Guides > Books > World History
by: Barbara Mervyn

This book is not only an indispensable aid in the understanding of the reign of Elizabeth, it is also written in an attractive and appealing manner, which generates a genuine interest for the topic. As an A-Level History student I have found it both an exceptional read and a valuable study guide, the engaging way in which it is written makes History homework, research, coursework and revision undemanding and enjoyable. Each chapter has comprehensive detail of the many aspects that affected the failures and successes of Elizabeth’s government and the summaries, focus tasks and essay questions ensure that the information is grasped in addition to providing valuable exam practise, whilst the diagrams, illustrations and charts are an effective revision ... . Betty's Wartime Diary 1939-1945
City Travel Guides > Books > World History
by: Betty Armitage
July 05, 2002
I was so disappointed with this book, somehow to me it just doesnt ring true that this was written by a middle aged woman in war time, I would be interested how much of the authors slant was put on the originals diaries, everything is very much glossed over and the fact that in the introduction the author states that most of the original diaries are now unavailable, left me wondering... If you want a thoroughly good read of war time diaries look no further than the three books by Simon Garfield based on the Mass Observation Probject, they are absolutely superb and I think that is what has left me wanting more in this publication, oh well!

. On a Wing and a Prayer: The Untold Story of the Pioneering Aviation Heroes of WW1, in Their Own Words
City Travel Guides > Books > World History
by: Joshua Levine
May 06, 2008
If you are newcomer to Britain's flying services during the First World War, this book is a must. If you know your way around the subject already, then it will still surprise, inform and entertain you nonetheless.
Mr Levine does to the flying services in the Great War what Patrick Bishop did to Fighter and Bomber Commands in the Second World War. Superbly structured, very well written, and obviously intricately researched, the book guides you around the subject of air fighting over the Western Front and the Home Front with ease. The history of the flying services is intertwined with the history of the men who flew and serviced the aircraft. I have never seen training covered in anywhere near such detail before (an entire chapter), and the same treatment ... Read More:

. The Perfect Summer: Dancing into Shadow in 1911
City Travel Guides > Books > World History
by: Juliet Nicolson
July 12, 2007
What a pity the author spent so long skimming the froth and gave us not quite enough of the absorbing layer beneath. The subject chosen was of great interest, yet I came away unsatisfied from the feast and irritated by the frequent presumptions of what the characters may have been thinking as history unfolded around them. How to know? Does it matter? There are also inaccuracies that should have been edited carefully; for example Grand Duchess Augusta of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was Queen Mary's aunt, not great-aunt, being the sister of her mother, 'Fat Mary', and, as far as I know, always lived in Germany, not Austria. She died in Neustrelitz in 1916.
However, the book has its charms and gives us some background details we may be hearing for the first time. I have ... Read More:

. Knights Templar Encyclopedia: The Essential Guide to the People, Places, Events, and Symbols of the Order of the Temple
City Travel Guides > Books > World History
by: Karen Ralls
May 31, 2007
Brilliant! a fantastic, comprehensive work of reference for anyone interested in the order of the Knights Templar. Karen Ralls is well known for balanced historical writing, including both orthodox and speculative angles, generated by unrelenting scholarship. Here she has put together a book that will be valued for years to come, everything you wanted to know about the Templars and much more.
Includes a chronology etc, and photos. Highly recomended!
