The definitive guide to world history. I haven't quite finished it yet (it's taken me a year!) but it gives you an amazing synopsis and helps to put events into perspective. World events that you previously would not have considered as important as others are given greater prominence, and vice versa. It shows that many of the current problems are certainly not new or different. A book every politician (and every other member of the planet for that matter) should read!!

An impressive panoramic narrative of the battle for Germany, "Armageddon" combines a wide range of sources (including many veterans) with Hastings's sharp, often iconoclastic judgement. His criticism of the military folly of Operation Market Garden, the Ardennes offensive, and Zhukov's Oder crossing is hard-hitting, but frequently deserved. Hastings is no apologist for military failings, although he frequently gets moralistic: discussions of the justice of the allied cause or the tyranny of Stalin, which is perceived in downright Manichean terms, should not be part of a work of history. Contrary to the previous review this book is a good book for undergraduate history students. Jordanova herself states in the prelimanaries of the book that she is not writing a normal book. She geared the book towards students and therefore will not have all of the accepted historical writing rules. The book is good for learning how history relates to other fields as well as what it is like to study history for a living. Do not buy this book if you want to source from it because it is not that kind of book. It is the kind of book a professor would use in a second year historiography course to get students to be interested in history without falling asleep.

This is a first rate general introduction to Latin American history. It covers all the major movements and events in a sensible and balanced fashion and is written in a pleasantly accessible style. I particularly enjoyed the sections on literary and cultural developments. The text is supported by well-chosen charts and a useful selection of black-and-white maps which bring out clearly some of the points the author makes. Doubtless recognising that no work of this length can go into particular aspects of Latin American in any kind of detail the author has taken some pains over his bibliography, giving several good suggestions for further reading. I wish all regional histories were of this quality!

The introduction to this book sets the scene of the wartime kitchen and beyond during rationing, and continues with reproductions of wartime leaflets. For content I would have given this book five stars but marked it down by one since I found some of the reproductions rather difficult to read due to poor quality - even with my super new reading glasses.

This book is not just a nostalgic look at the past but contains valuable nutritional advice which is as applicable today with the range of foods available to us as it was then.

Given the current economic climate and the need for us all to reduce food and energy waste, there are many useful tips to pick up from this book. Filling, wholesome food and a balanced diet is possible ... Read More:

I really enjoyed this book, which I found easy to read and gripping. A dynamic and organic view of muslim life for a young man growing up in London, written by a muslim whos belief structure changes as his exposure to the radical and fundmentlist elements increases. A balanced book, that I found interesting and informative and leaves the reader with a thirst for more knowledge. Im really pleased I got this book, buy it....

Truly eye opening stuff, if the genesis in the bible deals with the "why" (as is the case with religion) then this is the history behind it. An all encompassing history of the world that'll make you see things in a new light, how sad and messed up humans have become, and what needs to happen to save our race. Very compelling read, though sometimes it dips a little too much into the spiritual side of things and may come across as biased rather than pure research. They should make this compulsory reading at schools instead of nonsense such as creation theory.
