Much to the embarassment of many, including his superiors, Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty rescued many from faschism and certain death in Rome during World War II. He did it all with a twinkle in his eye and a sense of humour that kept him sane throughout it all.

A man who is largely unrecognised in Ireland. I wonder if he would like the idea that he has a commemorative grove of trees and a poem dedicated to him by Brendan Kennelly. He was never a man who sought fame, just a man who thought he was doing a job, the job he became a priest to do and that it was only right to do it as best he could. With co-operation of many people around him he ensured the survival of many.

Antony Beevor's masterly account of one of the key battles of WWII combines the readability of a novel with the deep research of a professional historian. He looks at the battle from the perspectives of the Soviet high command, the German high command, and ordinary soldiers on both sides of the conflict. This is essentially a military history, so its main purpose is not to examine the moral questions behind Operation Barbarossa. Yet Beevor still leaves the reader with a deep distaste for the wicked decisions made by the German leadership in their desire to pursue a war of extermination, and for the callous way that the Soviet command squandered the lives of millions of Red Army soldiers. I must admit I didn't buy this book from Amazon, in fact I have had it more than 25 years and I still enjoy reading it.

Gripping descriptions of bombing missions are interspersed with other anecdotes, often very funny and irreverant. You get a real feeling of what it was like and how Currie and his crew coped when others didn't.

Highly recommended.

This is quite possibly the best history book I've read. It weaves personal accounts into the fabric of history, making for a rich tapestry. Three years after reading it I still find myself thinking about some of the characters. David Wanklyn, commander of the submarine Upholder, stands out, as does the skill and bravery of Adrian `Warby' Warburton, a reconnaissance pilot; Warby even led an enemy ship to the downed crew of another Allied plane. Warby forged a relationship with Christina Ratcliffe, a dancer. How this unravels is, for me, one of the most poignant moments of the book.

"Wartime:Britian 1939-1945" by Juliet Gardiner has to be one of the best history books about war-time England. Ms. Gardiner cover a wide range of topics about everyday life in England. This book should not be missed by any history fan.

I went on a battlefield tour of the D-Day landing beaches and the Normandy campaign, and found this fantastically useful. Having things like the flooded areas marked on the map helped put it all into context on the ground.

I am not a huge fan of motor racing, but despite this I enjoyed the first chapters of the book which is mostly about the early lives and racing careers of the saboteurs. The author really brings the people to life and makes the reader care about them.
Once he starts writing about their SOE activities the book comes to life. He must have done an enormous amount of research, because, despite reading many, many books on the SOE, I found a lot of new information.
Excellently researched.

has a non biased view and an excellent amount of information in here with many activities for a-level students

however if there was to be a 2nd addition there would need to be some colour and some breaks in the paragraphs because much of chris's excellent views and information aren't poitned out so clearly
