This is in all senses a fascinating book. So rare to read a factual acccount of the war written by a woman, about women. It benefits greatly from a throrough treatment of the human and personal aspects of life in these momentous times. It is at once a biography, a detective story, a spy story and a narrative of war time events, illuminated throughout by the tale of the enigmatic life and tragic end of Noor Inayat Khan. It is a very fitting tribute to the other courageous women and men of SOE. The only problem with this book is putting it down once you have started reading.

Thank goodness the banning of this book that resulted in the pulping of the 1st edition has been overturned.
This excellent book tells the story of the 1st attempt to make a Bond film that resulted in the scripts that were partially cannibalised for the novel "Thunderball"
The main meat is the unsucessful attempts by Kevin McClory to set up a Bond film and the court case that resulted from the accusations of plagiarism of the scripts for Fleming's novel. Sellers paints a fascinating picture of a film world that was intrigued by James Bond but never enough to put serious money or commitment into it.

A-Level and AS students may well know this already - but buy, beg or borrow your own copy as soon as you can. Clear, concise narratives and careful explanation of historical opinion make this an essential text for anyone studying Germany and/or Italy in the 20th century. The author has pitched this book at exactly the right level for sixth-formers, although the general reader would enjoy this too. Highly recommended.

Having read a few pilots' biographies it is easy to see these fall into a similar vein; namely signing-up, training, combat and the consequences from combat and escaping death (where many others did not).

This is a little different in that Brian Kingcome added more of his personal life as an overlay well before, during and well after his military flying days. The first line typifies this with the statement "Anyone looking for a chronological order of events won't find it here." It is therefore much the better for it, and it is an enjoyable read of a modest man.

Another epic piece of work from this prodigious young writer. I guess that most of us, of a certain at least, are aware of the outline of events that shaped WW2 around the world but have never taken the trouble to read any historical accounts, either by professional historians or by the generals who tend to publish their own accounts of how they won the war. Well this is something different, written like a novel, with personal accounts by both the generals and other participants, including the humble soldiers of all nations. These 2 volumes on the hitler youth panzer division, are not for the faint of heart.
The detail and indepth study of the fighting and division composition
is staggering. The narrative focus's on every, single action undertaken by elements of the 12th SS pz. div.
Usually following individual abteilung, the author frequently goes down to platoon and even squad level.
Not only reporting from the German perspective, the allied point of view is studied as well.
Having been a student of the second world war since I was a teenager,
I can state that there aren't many divisional historys that are so
thorough as this study of the 12th SS.
Approach with caution if you are a casual reader! You've been warned.
