I enjoyed this book as it always remindes me that im glad i never have to be put in that possision, but be wary if you have not read may military or war books before, the time that he spends in sub Zero tempature may lead you to think that it is not totaly true, but i can not say ether way if it is or isent, i wasent there, but if it is, then Jan is a very though and they certainly dont make them like they used to!! This is the greatest story ever told told by one of the greatest story tellers ever. Churchill was a magnificent writer, fully deserving of his Nobel prize for literature. His account of the war is positively Tolkienesque, sounding at times almost like the very best science fiction. One gets insights into the grand strategy and global logistics of the war at an extraordinary level of detail. Somewhere around volumes 4 or 5 we have Churchill's account of the 48 hours or so where he flew from London to Egypt to sort out his generals, and then on to Tehran for lunch, then for Dinner and Cigars with Stalin with whom he proceeds to get utterly drunk before flying off at 5 in the morning, wrapped in blankets in a frozen transport plane, in time ... I studied history but now I'm just looking for straight forward enjoyable narrative history. This is a well researched, well written book. However, I'm finding it very hard to work my way through, and often I've read a whole page without paying any attention to it as it is so dense and detailed. I would recommend this book if you are studying this at university, but if you want some bedside reading, think twice about it. The section on resistance is very good though.

This excellent and gripping book is a must buy for anyone serious about understanding the Second World War and its aftermath, as well as for anyone serious about cracking good reads. On almost every page there is a fascinating fact - not least legendary British actor Anthony Quayle's involvement in SOE - and they are all woven into a skillful whole that will by the end give the reader a new perspective on Europe and the perils of messing about in other people's countries. By turns breathtaking, funny, tragic and sometimes horrifying, the book is an indictment of the human spirit and what it is capable of: courage, determination, betrayal and dreadful violence. The best kind of modern history writing.

The book chronicles the history of death, destruction and the grim realities of WWII in great detail and its impact on stock market in both losing and winning countries. Stock markets were always one step ahead of actual events in estimating, analyzing, and deciphering the economic future through changing stock prices. This work is already regarded as a classic of its type and deservedly so. Horne brings his usual eye for the illuminating detail and the dramatic event combined with his superb style. If you haven't read any of Alistair Horne's work before you can start with this one...and then I would recommend reading anything else by him as well. Brilliant.
