In the current financial climate of negative equity and rising prices, we all need to make do and mend. There really is no need to keep buying new stuff when there is a bit of life left in something older and this books will help you.

Featuring reproductions of wartime pamphlets, some of the print quality is not perfect. A little sewing experience would be a good thing, but not vital.

In the war years fabric, ready made clothes were rationed and in short supply, and so was cash! So if you had a good dress but needed a larger one, this book tells you how to insert strips of fabric to bring new life to old garments.

I picked this book up from Amazon for £3.99 and as always I am mindful of the fact that cheap books do not always equate with a quality read. How wrong I was and this book is a little piece of modern history. Hugh Allen (Co-Editor) is one of the few survivors of this interpid band of WW 2 Spitfire pilots belonging to 66 Squadron. The foreword is written by Jimmy Corbin, himself a pilot and chapter contributor.
The re-issued book provides personal histories of the exploits of 10 of these pilots and it was first written in 1942. What makes this book unique is that each of the 10 chapters are written by the pilots themselves soon after the 1940 Battle of Britain, each having their own distinct personalities and writing style. Hasting's 'Overlord' has earned a reputation of being almost as close as one can get to becoming a definitive history of the 1944 landings in Normandy.

Whilst far superior to the work of 'historians' such as Stephen Ambrose, there is still an overwhelming feeling of this book being authored by a journalist and not an historian. Hastings makes many sweeping statements, many of which are totally unfounded, yet does very little to substantiate his claims. He constantly enforces the popular misconception, which have almost become fashionable, to criticise rather than to focus on the positives. Reading 'Overlord' found me actually questioning myself as to whether or not the Allies actually won the Battle of Normandy or not.

A great work, but 'Survival in Auschwitz' is just the American name for 'If This Is A Man', which is published in Britain together with 'The Truce'. Amazon has it, it's better value as well as a better title.

The number of reviews for this book should be recommendation enough, gripping from start to finish and a fitting tribute to all Battle of Britain pilots and not least Geoffrey Wellum himself!

Buy this book is all I can say, I have read many books on the holocaust, and life within the concentration camps, and 'Five Chimneys' is one well worth reading......... it will stay with you forever, I also highly recommend 'Is this a man' by Primo Levi. God Bless all the survivors, and all those who died such tragic deaths, under such unbelievable, hellish circumstances. It certainly puts ones life into perspective!

In this book, Figes has diluted and refined his mastery of the art of weaving historical sources together. These family narratives which, without this book, would certainly have been lost, provide a compelling insight into the reality of Soviet Russia - the 'historical' backdrop of dates and movements takes a back seat to the gritty honesty of real people's testimony of what living through this era was actually like.
A fantastic read.
