. Spitfire Women of World War II
City Travel Guides > Books > World War II 1939-1945
by: Giles Whittell
July 01, 2008
By coincidence I'd just read Diana Barnato Walker's autobiography when I came across this book. Very much enjoyed the additional insights from other pilots and also it helped that the author was also able to put things in historical context. I found the book a real "page-turner" and full of amusing stories and gossip.
I enjoyed reading it even more than I did DBW's own account and also Jeffrey Quill's and Alex Henshaw's biographies which I also read in the past few months.

. World War II for Kids: A History with 21 Activities
City Travel Guides > Books > World War II 1939-1945
by: Richard Panchyk
February 05, 2003
"World War II for Kids: A History with 21 Activities" really has three key components. First, there is a history of World War II from Hitler's rise to power in 1933 to the surrender of the Japanese in 1945. Second, Richard Panchyk provides excerpts from actual wartime letters written to and by troops on both sides along with personal anecdotes from people who lived through the war. Finally, there are 21 activities that can show young readers how it felt to live through World War II, both on the battlefield and on the Home Front. Actually, the first function is the least impressive part of "World War II for Kids," although Panchyk provides a solid history of the war. It is just that the personal writings and recollections, along with ... Read More:

. The Drowned and the Saved (Abacus Books)
City Travel Guides > Books > World War II 1939-1945
by: Primo Levi
February 01, 1991
The author, Primo Levi, tries to understand the rationale behind Auschwitz, Treblinka, Bergen-Belsen. Dismissing stereotyped images of brutal Nazi torturers and helpless victims, Levi draws extensively on his own experiences and substantial intelect to delve into the minds and motives of oppressors and oppressed alike. Describing the difficulty and shame of remembering, the limited forms of collaboration between inmates and SS goalers, the exploitation of "useless violence" and the plight of the intellectual, Levi writes about the issue of power, mercy and guilt, and their effects on the lives of the ordinary people who suffered so incomprehendingly. A sad tale of an attempt to rationalise mans behaviour in the most extreme of circumstances.

. Spy Princess: The Life of Noor Inayat Khan
City Travel Guides > Books > World War II 1939-1945
by: Shrabani Basu
August 30, 2008
I bought this on the strength of other reviews but also had an interest in both the period and unusual Noor story. The main body of text is less than 200 pages, so hardly an indepth analysis of her life. We are treated to a lot of facts, mostly useless, for example house numbers, times meetings took place and dates. Oh, lots of dates, the second world war began in September 1945, wow! Then we are given a throw-away line that France were reluctant participants. Perhaps expanding upon this may have helped us to understand Noor's subsequent decision to leave France. I don't need to know what date war was declared.
We are treated to a few paragraphs of Noor's early life, but only as an excuse for the author's love of name-dropping, which occurs constantly. ... Read More:

. Stalin: A Biography
City Travel Guides > Books > World War II 1939-1945
by: Robert Service
September 02, 2005
This is a really good book. While Stalin may be a character who it's hard to empathise with, Service approaches the topic with complete objectiity, leaving the reader to make up their own minds on the facts. The book is divided into nearly 50 chapters of ten to twelve pages each, which makes it easier to digest each separate issue and event the author addresses. Overall, great book for anyone keen on knowing more about Stalin.

. Ten Fighter Boys
City Travel Guides > Books > World War II 1939-1945
by: D.F.C. Forbes, D.F.C. Allen
April 07, 2008
I picked this book up from Amazon for £3.99 and as always I am mindful of the fact that cheap books do not always equate with a quality read. How wrong I was and this book is a little piece of modern history. Hugh Allen (Co-Editor) is one of the few survivors of this interpid band of WW 2 Spitfire pilots belonging to 66 Squadron. The foreword is written by Jimmy Corbin, himself a pilot and chapter contributor.
The re-issued book provides personal histories of the exploits of 10 of these pilots and it was first written in 1942. What makes this book unique is that each of the 10 chapters are written by the pilots themselves soon after the 1940 Battle of Britain, each having their own distinct personalities and writing style. As you progress through the book you ... Read More:

. Dunkirk: The Men They Left Behind
City Travel Guides > Books > World War II 1939-1945
by: Sean Longden
May 29, 2008
This book was a very good read and I would recommend reading it to anyone interested in WWII history. A little known aspect of the conflict was brought to life here. The personal testimonies were very good and the "where are they now" section at the end of the book was a nice touch.
Unfortunately there were errors such as spelling, some details and I think judgements were made which I am not sure were completely valid. However, for me the most glaring error was the complete omission of any mention of Sgt Maj Charles Coward "the Count of Auschwitz" who was captured in 1940 near Calais. While a POW he rescued Jews from Auschwitz concentration camp and after the war testified at the Nuremburg war crimes trials.
