. The Forgotten Garden
by: Kate Morton
May 29, 2008
I don't even know where to start in reviewing this book. I can't quite remember when a book drew me in and kept my attention for the duration of the novel like this one did. It was a long book but it was so engrossing I read it within a couple of days, I literally couldn't put it down. It was absolutely magical. Well done Kate Morton!
The story begins in 1913 with a very little girl who lands in Australia apparently without any history, even to the extent of not remembering her own name, only that a lady called 'the Authoress' is supposed to be looking after her and she has disappeared. She is taken in by the harbour master and his family and when no one comes forward to claim her they decide to keep her and call her Nell. Nell ... Read More:

. The Memory Garden

I persisted with this book far longer than I should have - I could have been reading something worthwhile. Ploughed through to the half way point, expecting that something interesting must happen soon (no), not at all interested in what happened to any of the dull and one dimensional characters. I eventually skipped to the end to see what happened, which was what I was expecting. Saved myself a few hours and can now move onto something I might actually enjoy. Disappointing.

. East of the Sun

An easy read that suited me as a holiday choice - a rich, narrative that surprised me really, I even found myself checking out what the flowers and places so well described were on the web!!!! You become carried away with the lives of the girls and their travels, their naivety and dreams. Not stunning or anything profound, but most definately enjoyable and read-worthy.

. The Outcast
by: Sadie Jones
June 16, 2008
You can't not get totally absorbed in this story about 1950's middle class prejudice and hypocrisy. The story kept me completely hooked and I read it in just 2 evenings (and nights!!!). Lewis's (main character) journey takes you through all emotions possible, from sadness and despair to anger and even complacency. An excellant read that portrays the real bare bones of human nature and relationships. You ceratinly won't regret this read! Enjoy.

. Voyage of Innocence
by: Elizabeth Edmondson
December 26, 2005
Although the book gets off to a confusing start and there are a lot of characters to get to grips with (I went back and read Part 1 when I had read Part 2) this is a really thought provoking book. It's good to read a character driven story that acknowledges that some people are interested in history and politics as well as romance and family saga. It's a fascinating insight into Britain in the 1930s as well as a good story.

. A Perfect Revenge
by: Annabel Dilke
September 03, 2007
I had high expectations for this book - the other Amazon reviews are glittering - so I was more than a little dismayed to find it a big let down. Quite simply, I found the writer's style to be clumsy (i.e. awkward use of adverbs such as 'very brazenly') and the plot rambled on dreadfully until, in the final pages, it fizzled out in one of the biggest anti-climaxes I've experienced in fiction. I persevered with the story in the vain hope that it would suddenly improve and contain some startling revelation. However, one of the so-called twists was embarrassingly obvious and the other was so under-developed as to be meaningless. Give it a miss!

. Villa Serena
by: Domenica de Rosa
September 20, 2007
According to the magazine column that Emily writes, life in Italy is just perfect. In reality though, it's certainly not. After her husband leaves her, Emily is left alone in their Tuscan farmhouse, along with her three children, who all have their own problems.
We are gradually introduced to Emily, her children, her friends, and her new love interest, and the developing story is warmly and humorously told.
The surrounding countryside and towns are delightfully described, and there is some interesting local history explored.
The various storylines all weave together towards the end, and finishing the book felt like leaving behind some good friends.
