. Venice
by: Jan Morris
October 07, 2004
I decided to read "Venice" in preparation for a week-long stay in the Italian city.
Broken into three sections -- The People, The City, The Lagoon -- "Venice" is not a chronological history of the city but a meandering look at its past, present and future. Nor is it a guidebook, although it does contain a mine of information about what to see and where to go.
I think "The Times" probably described it best when they said it was "a classic love letter to Italy's most iconic city", because it is, indeed, a beautiful missive dripping with exquisite descriptions. I found it an enormously engaging and evocative read by an accomplished writer who really knows how to string a simile or two together. For example: "Venice is ... Read More:

. No Vulgar Hotel: The Desire and Pursuit of Venice
by: J Martin
March 18, 2008
A brilliant companion for anyone thinking of going to Venice or for those people the author Judith Martin describes as Venetophiles.
Lots of gossipy history and facts run through the book and it's fun to dip into it to sate one's thirst.
Eight years ago on a week long trip to Venice,I was lucky enough to have a quick look inside one of the palazzi mentioned in the book (the one where Wagner composed some of Tristan and Isolde) . It's the Palazzo Brandolini and was "owned" or rented by the Rosekrans family. In fact, the author mentions going to a ball there.
I'm going next month and ideeed will not be staying at No Vulgar Hotel. Rented a sweet studio in a Palazzo on the GC bang opposite Byron's Mocegino! Will be ... Read More:

. A History of Venice
by: John Julius Norwich
July 03, 2003
This review refers to the 2003 Penguin edition, which consists of what had been two separate books issued in 1977 and 1981 respectively, namely "Venice: The Rise to Empire" and "Venice: The Greatness and Fall". Both books had been combined into one volume by Penguin in 1983. (For those wanting details of the city's history after 1797, John Julius Norwich has produced a quasi-successor volume, "Paradise of Cities: Venice and Its Nineteenth Century Visitors", but, as its title indicates, this is as much concerned with prominent outsiders than with the city itself.)
Since the one-volume history was published in 1983, there has been no revision of the text; neither has there been an update of the bibliography nor the writing of a new introduction. ... Read More:

. Francesco's Kitchen
by: Francesco Da Mosto
October 11, 2007
This is a wonderful book for all those who are passionate about Venice. Presented with great style, it is certainly up to the standard of Franceso's previous publications. But this is not just a book of traditional recipes and pretty photographs, many pages are devoted to the produce used in Venetian cooking and the history of various ingredients. There are pages describing 18th. century life in the palazzi of Venice and four pages devoted to the humble fork. This is a book that will transport you to the Grand Canal everytime you read it. Oh if only all trattoria and ristorante in Venice had a copy!

. The Girl of His Dreams
by: Donna Leon
April 03, 2008
Having waited keenly for the next 'Guido Brunetti' to appear, I read the dust cover summary and made a start soon after publication. 90 pages in, I was wondering if the publishers had made some sort of printing error - the dead girl had not yet been found in the Canal and the religious fraudster seemed to be going nowhere. It is only on page 100 that the real story begins and the original story is only mentioned again, as an apparent afterthought, towards the conclusion.
Ms Leon could have published the drowned girl tale as one of a series of a short stories(now there's an idea Donna!) and the previous reviewer's theory of a false start seems to be well founded. I wonder if Brunetti's career is coming to a close - maybe it's time for him to retire ... Read More:

. Venice for Pleasure
by: J.G. Links
July 31, 2000
This is a review of the revised seventh edition of 2000, "reprinted with revisions" in 2002. The work was originally published in 1966. It is a small oddly shaped book, in landscape format, which will fit into most coat pockets.
In his 52-page introduction, JG Links says that the book, "is a guide to the pleasures of Venice without its pains. Its simple object is to guide the reader to places he might otherwise miss and, having reached them, to tell him what he might wish to know and then leave him there to admire, to enjoy or, perhaps, to be disappointed." It is intended for (a) those who possess at least one other guide book; (b) those who are walkers; and (c) those who are in Venice to enjoy themselves. The last two of these criteria speak for themselves, ... Read More:

. Acqua Alta
by: Donna Leon
April 04, 1997
I've read quite a few books in this Inspector Brunetti series, all of which I've enjoyed. I haven't read them in chronological order, but that hasn't mattered: the only difference it makes is that Brunetti's two children vary in age. This particular book is early in the series and, I thought, one of her very best with the added bonus that I learned some more about the backgrounds of the characters. I read it quickly as the story was so engrossing. The chilly dampness of Venice in the winter adds a tremendous atmosphere to the book as the rising sea level of the Acqua Alta is anticipated and experienced by the characters as water ebbs and flows over the pavements of the city.
