After reading Frayling's biography of Leone I had to go back and buy this. Prefering Once Upon A Time ... to the Dollars Trilogy, for me it was worth it for just that chapter. Perhaps there's too much focus on Leone, but he was the main man and I can't let that slight flaw slip the rating to four stars from a deserved five. It cost me shop-price £16 so strong advice would be to use Amazon!

This is close to a perfect film. Sergio Leone at his best, Henry Fonda as a bad guy, Charles Bronson as the "goodie" AND with an Ennio Morricone score. What more could you ask for?
Cinematically stunning with some incredible sequences that Leone was not afraid to linger over, a strong plot and a great script.
A truly fantastic film.

This is the main reason to watch this spaghetti weatern, for me. The screenplay is pretty good too, and gives both actors plenty to chew on, especially the ever garrulous Mr Steiger. I like the real contrast of the two characters here, the laid back, laconic Irish rover of Coburn, against the fiery and arrogant Mexican bandit of Steiger. The friction between these two partners in convenience causes as much heat as their explosions. Leone's ambitious sweeping style makes this movie sag a little in the middle, but the novelty of the plot and the sizzling interplay between the two polar opposite personalities who mistrust and dislike each other but unite for sake of greed, make this movie worth staying with. For a few dollars more is a great western and is far superior to a fist full of dollars. This film has great pacing and a fantastic score by ennio morricone a great run up to the good the bad and the ugly.

I reccomend this for people who haven't seen a good western before and even those who have.

Fistfull of Dollars, introduced us to Sergio Leone's masterpiece that were Spaghetti Westerns. It also made clint Eastwood a star, and would lead to two extremely successful follow ups, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

It introduced the world to Sergio Leone's sharp directing and fondness for extreme close ups, often copied since, but never really bettered.

Clint Eastwood stars as the man with no name, a remake of an old japaneese film called Yojimbo. Clint is perfectly cast as the clever gunslinger as a man of actions rather than words. Here, he plays two gangs off against each other, which all climaxes in a wonderfully memorable scene which reveals the full extent of Clint's cunning.

I was lucky enough to get this dvd collection recently on a wet saturday morning via Amazon for £12. Having had the house to myself i decided to buy two bottles of wine and a few cheap cigars. I plugged my Bose Quiet Comfort headphones into the TV, and ripped into the booze with a determined intensity. I started off this marathon session with the entertaining comedy Ballad of Cable Hogue (6/10). I then played the under rated 1962 Ride the High Country (7/10), and after having watched the classic Pat Garrett (8/10), i decided to give 'The Wild Bunch' (10/10) a whirl whilst finishing the second bottle of Rioja.
That was a good saturday afternoon.

A couple of the negative reviews on this page are actually referring to a very poor earlier DVD; yet Amazon (in their wisdom) have posted them on this page! Finding the best DVD (or the best copy for the money) is tricky enough without mixing the reviews up. It looks like they've posted the wrong product details as well. For the record, I'm talking about the NTSC R1 two-disc with a gold band at the top. The picture is a great improvement on earlier editions (at least one of which had sync problems, too). There's a lot more detail visible and with a film shot in gorgeous, deep-focus B&W that makes a big difference!
