. The Burning Blue
by: James Holland
June 17, 2004
Loved it. Joss was a wonderfully drawn character as were most of the secondary characters. Wasn't so sure about Stella, who seemed to fall in and out of love far too easily. But it didn't really spoil the story, apart from giving me a slight pause towards the end. Still a five star read and I'm very much looking forward to JH's next book.

. The Forgotten War
by: David Fiddimore
March 07, 2008
The trilogy reaches its peak with panache. Charlie has lived in a world where truth is stranger than fiction, so where it is fiction it is extremely difficult to portray with balance and conviction and David Fiddimore has improved with each book. Does it have to remain a trilogy? There is plenty of material out there for Charlie to be involved with and plenty of decades in which it could happen. I hope to meet him again, Mr. Fiddimore, if you should ever happen across this. I'll say it again. EXCELLENT!!!

. Rapscallion
by: James McGee
June 10, 2008
Rapscallion is James McGee's third Hawkwood novel. Hawkwood is a bow street runner, but very much in the vein of Sharpe, and those who enjoy Bernard Cornwall's writing will probably enjoy this too.
This is darker then the previous two and involves Hawkwood going undercover to help the Navy find two of its missing men who were investigating a prisoner smuggling ring. This involves Hawkwood going onto one of the infamous prison ships, Rapscallion, to follow the links in the chain while trying to stay alive.
Slightly less action in this one, but a little more history - but the history (prison ships, treatment of French prisoners etc) was not something I knew much about and it was interesting to read of an unpleasant aspect of our history. ... Read More:

. Italy's Sorrow: A Year of War 1944-45
by: James Holland
March 03, 2008
James Holland's generosity of spirit and indefatiguable labour has created one of the best general histories I've read recently--and there's a lot of stiff competition about. As well as using writen sources, Holland personally interviewed survivors from all sides of the conflict; Germans, Poles, Canadians, Britons, Americans, Italian partisans and fascists. These accounts give a vivid picture of the heroism and brutality of war, and instil a sense of sympathy for (almost) all of the participants. Their stories are skillfully blended into the larger narrative, which explains what happened, and why the major players (Alexander, Mark Clark, Kesselring, Churchill, Roosevelt, Mussolini, etc) made crucial decisions. Holland is immenently fair-minded; the controversy ... Read More:

. Azincourt
by: Bernard Cornwell
October 01, 2008
Cornwell at his very, very best.
If you enjoyed the Harlequin series featuring Thomas of Hookton then you will love this.
I read it within two days of receiving it and am gutted that it wasn't much longer even though it fully satisfied me as a true historical read.
Cornwell is the master of this style of writing. I really enjoy Conn Iggulden and Valerio Massimo Manfredi but Cornwell is the master.
My only wish is that Ridley Scott would take a story of Cornwell's like this one or the Harlequin series and make it into as visual a treat as the novels are writtenAzincourt.
More power to your quill Mr. Cornwell and long may your stories keep us as enthralled as this.

. Charlie's War
by: David Fiddimore
December 01, 2006
I really enjoyed this book. It seemed, in some ways less focussed than it's prequel, Tuesday's War, but it talked about the chaos, destruction and horror of Europe in early 1945 without being overwhelming and depressing. Some of the humour in it was a bit trite and there were some future-echoes, which always annoy me in historical novels, like lots of catchprases of the later 20th century being used, then noted in a little book by one of the characters.

. Devil May Care (James Bond)
by: Sebastian Faulks
May 28, 2008
Shall we call this a missed opportunity?
"Devil May Care" is a well paced thriller, that's about it.
I've never read Ian Fleming and I'm not a James Bond fan (anymore) but when I was younger I read James Bond and Moonraker (Film-Script Adaptation) and was fascinated (as a kid) by the character's stoic levels of endurance and impressed by the fact that whilst externally cool, internally 007 was in turmoil most of the time. Who better to expand on this theme than Sebastian Faulks post-Birdsong?
Unfortunately the author never really seizes the opportunity although there's the odd moment that comes close (e.g. "the cigar tube"). Maybe he's trying too hard to write like Ian Fleming? If that's the case I wouldn't know (or really care for ... Read More:

. Rules of War (Jack Steel 2)
by: Iain Gale
April 01, 2008
I cannot but feel let down after reading this book. After the first Jack Steel novel, yes there were obvious reasons why it should be compared to the Sharpe adventures, but has a good yarn I felt it had good merit, and stood up very well on its own. This second novel lacked pace ( except towards the end )and certainly was nowhere has good a read has the first.
Lets hope Mr Gale third one regains the momentum.
