This is, without a doubt, the difinitive guide to what to do now you own a pasta machine. My only complaint is that it lacks some of the great photography that marks modern cookery writing (see the "A little Taste of" series for what I mean). If you make your own pasta don't be daunted by the baffling array of shapes he uses, I find that most recipes work equally whatever I add them to (although this isn't a popularist view back in Italy). Given the game season is almost upon us, try the rabbit/pheasant/mushroom recipe - divine.

.Simple Italian Cookery

a range of recipes some of which you will have seen before. I think the strength of this book is that it is so small (i.e. there's not hundreds of recipes) and so all it contains are dishes you'd actually want to cook and, possibly more importantly, those you can cook.

Unlike other cook books, Aldo doesnt just show you the finished product and give you instructions on how to get there, he also gives you photographs of what the dish should look like at various stages so this gives you some condfidcence that what you are doing is right.

If you've never cooked Italian before (and I have) then this is a good book to get you started - a book full of simple cooking, simply put !

I have really enjoyed reading through this book. It's probably more of a reference book than an every-day useful one, but is definitely worth owning.

I have found this book to be a constant source of inspiration for my attempts liven up the boring bolognese and have used the spicy prawns with pasta on numerous occasions to great effect.

Many of the recipes do, however, require a little more than rudimentary cooking skill, a well stocked cupboard and often a little detective work to track down an obscure ingredient or a suitable alternative. The results of perseverance are worthwhile though.

Gino's book demonstrates how simple it is to produce excellent italian cooking very easily. All the ingredients are easy to get and use. It's good to see that he doesn't just focus on the traditional pasta dishes, but brings a wide variety of mediteranean flavour to your kitchen. I particularly love his endorsemment of tinned tuna & salmon - no filleting or gutting. Great and easy to use with flavoursome recipes. Fantastico!!!

Because I loved Food For Friends by Aldo Zilli sooo much, I just had to get this one. The Zilli Cookbook was even better that the last one....more beautiful pictures and I've tried and tested plenty of the recipes, the Field Mushrooms With Goats Cheese Gratin, Grilled Smoked Buffalo Mozzarella Wrapped in Parma Ham,Pasta and Bean Soup, Fried Taleggio Tomato and Basil Salad [which my boyfriend keeps asking me to make over and over again]Spaghetti with Olive Oil, Garlic and Chilli which I make at least once a week now, Pappardelle with Tuna Meatballs [mouth watering], Wild Mushroom Risotto which is soooooooooo delicious, Potato Gratin with Fontina Cheese, turkey escalopes with lemons sauce and the list could gone on...I'm sure I've tried half of ... After a glass of pinot grigio or chianti I enjoy cyber shopping and have an embarrassing collection of cookery books, mostly destined for the charity shops. Every now and again I stumble on a classic that I will cherish and recommend. Marcella Hazan is not a celeb. tv chef and her book of 722 pages is soft back, on standard paper and without pictures. Having enjoyed universal success with several of her classic recipes you will realise that the glossy promoted cookery books deliver for the coffee table, not the dining table. I've bought a second copy of this book for a friend. You won't be disappointed.

My first impression, having bought this book, was enthusiasm. All these great recipes, great ideas. But as I read through the recipes I found the lack of advice and explanation disapointing. I re-read the instructions for jointing a chicken about four times, and I still don't understand them. Why not illustrate the steps for something like this?

Anyway, I came away wondering if I should have got Jamie Oliver instead.
