Around three years ago my partner and I decided to go camping in Wales, revisiting a site he had stayed at many years ago. It turns out that we were cool even then, but didn't know it. After many enjoyable visits we began to consider the possibility of going to ... other sites. But where to start? A few tentative searches on the internet and a leaf through the Rough Guide confirmed our suspicions. We were cowards. What we wanted was for someone to nudge us in the ribs and point us towards campsites with stunning views, friendly owners and like-minded souls. And tell us what we could do if it rained. When my book came through the post and flicked through the pages, I actually started juming about and screaming!!! The pictures are so amazing. I was in so much excitement about the holiday I am going on this summer. I am going cycle touring in France, and this book is going to become my bible. Infact I was so impressed by it, I planned my whole route so that I could pick up as many campsites as possible. Trust me, the campsites are totally stunning, well thats if you think stunning is beautiful, rural, and peaceful campsites with breath taking views!

There are very many things that I love about this book. So far I've had it a very short time and have already had an incredibly therapeutic swim, about 10 miles from where I have lived for over 20 years, which I had no idea was there. It was the most beautiful spot and the pub recommended in the book was such a find, being friendly, serving good beer and food, having a gorgeous wildflower garden and being over a thousand years old.

Having this book means I am much more likely to get out and swim in beautiful places, and not just paddle, worried about currents, debris and pond weed. So all those good intentions are finally coming good and I can entice friends along too. It's definitely going to be the basis of many UK holidays to come. ... Read More:

This is such a cute little book! the recipes aren't really hi-tec or anything but it tells you how to build a fire and gives you checklists for equipment and stuff, which is good if you've never been camping before. and it's got lots of yum stuff i never would have thought of, like cooking roast chicken or this omlette with strawberries in. Theer are other harder recipes, but I preferd the easy, messy stuff which involves stuffing things on sticks! And barbecue stuff is well-covered too. The pictures look good but not fake, and the words are quite quirky and funny, made me laugh anyway, which i wasn't expecting. glad i bought it... might spur me on to cook a bit more outdoors instead of heading to the pub...

You will love this book when it arrives. It is great to look at and involving to read, but the problems arise when you actually come to use it as a camping guide. The accounts are too subjective and seem to be based on a very particular and personal takes on the sites. Those at Arisaig for example are talked up as the amongst the finest in Scotland. When we were there they were crowded out with motorhomes running generators and the sunsets were somewhat spoiled by the portable television aerials. There was no room left for tents. There were other sites in the area which were not mentioned, but which did have room for tents and which seemed to be at least as good as though in the guide. As a self-proclaimed boho clad yummy-mummy (well I'd like to be) - definitely more flash packer than back packer, I must say I found this book a bitter disappointment. It is, for all intents and purposes, a beautifully styled extended magazine feature - the sort of thing you might find in "Cosmopolitan" with lots of photos or pink, floral and retro-style camping accessories but very little substance. In a simillar vein - a much, much better and robust read is "The Happy Campers" by Tess Carr and Kat Heyes.

Camping is a somewhat re-visited activity and, over the years, I'm used to 'AA' books, which are, generally, reliable and offer a list of places to troll through, so I grabbed the book off the shelf without really looking at it! Fool that I am.


Now, this is a book, right?... and you are meant to be able to read it easily, right?... OK, yes I wear 'readers' but the print is still somewhat small and the font could have been better, but my gripe is with the symbols for what each site offers...they are truly small and difficult to distinguish, especially in low light. The symbols are the key and worth a thousand words, so should be crystal! AND...what about dogs?...OK it has a symbol for 'dog exercise area', so one assumes dogs are welcome at these ... Read More:
