I love this book. It's an unusual mixture, a hard book to categorise, but that's its stength. For many who come to Tuscany it's the perfect mixture as the great food and beautiful scenery combined are such a part of the pleasure. Beth Elon suggests driving routes with places to see along the way, then explains the food specialities of each area,lists special places to eat, then gives a few sample recipes from each restaurant. One of the real strengths is the local specialities information, as it really highlights some of traditions and how food can be unique to a particular small location not just 'Tuscany' as a larger region. Fair enough - the title lets you know what you're getting, but those of us who only spent a day in Florence and the rest of the two weeks elsewhere might feel a bit short-changed. The street maps of Florence and Siena are excellent for getting a general idea of where you are, but not so good for actually finding a particular restaurant which the guide lists.

The ideal combination is this and the Lonely Planet guide to Tuscany, which is lighter on the pictures but much more detailed.

.Walking and Eating in Tuscany and Umbria

We used this book for a trip to Umbria with our children ages 9 and 12 and thought it was great, both for the walking and the eating. We have been to Tuscany several times and wanted to branch out to Umbria on this last trip, and can only say we wish we had done so sooner. We stayed in the lovely town of Norcia, and did the "san Eutizio" walk: an amazing adventure with children! Norcia was an easy place to be with kids, the hotel recommended in the book was extremely friendly, the town had such a safe feeling and enough of interest (particularly the gelato bar) to the kids to keep them busy. The walk - one of the longer ones in the book - was an ambitious one for kids, but gave them an exceptional feeling of accomplishment at the end, and they loved ... Read More:

I took this book along with others to Tuscany - my first visit. We were staying in the middle of Chiantishire and found the book invaluable and for our limited time there, accurate. There are detailed descriptions of Florence and Siena but also some helpful guidance on the Tuscany villages. Useful because the villages take time to get to and we needed to prioritise. Very accurate about the restaurants and trattorias we used.

Dont go to venice without this book , it has everything you need . We brought this along with the Lonely Planet Map and they were both excellent. Venice can be really busy but this book has many suggestions of where to spend your time. A perfect guide to a beautiful city.
