.Rome Pocket Map and Guide (Eyewitness Travel Guides)

Have just returned from a 5 day trip in Rome, using this little guide as one of the books used whilst there. It was very helpful, although it's quite tiny it was packed full of useful information, with good pictures, descriptions and advice. Although the maps only focus more on the centre of Rome they were adequate for our needs 4 days out of 5, as good as the map handed to us by our hotel.

Beautifully printed and clearly set out. Used this for a trip to the Amalfi coast and it highlighted some hidden gems to explore. Also included some good restaurant listings and tips. Excellent coverage of all areas, including Pompeii and Vesuvius.

Fair enough - the title lets you know what you're getting, but those of us who only spent a day in Florence and the rest of the two weeks elsewhere might feel a bit short-changed. The street maps of Florence and Siena are excellent for getting a general idea of where you are, but not so good for actually finding a particular restaurant which the guide lists.

The ideal combination is this and the Lonely Planet guide to Tuscany, which is lighter on the pictures but much more detailed.

very helpful if you are looking for a comprehensive guide to Venice. Spot on with it's information and giving an excellent overview of the City. Although Venice is an easy City to get around in and find your way, you might loose yourself in the many little streets. And then you want a reliable guide that gets you back on track. Gives great information about the usual tourist sites, but also invites you to make you own discoveries and lets you chose your tailor-made holiday. The only thing I would add is a guide to the best "Gelaterias" of the City! ;-) Wouldn't want to go on a holiday without my DK!

When I worked in the library service, I grew to admire Dorling Kindersley's Eyewitness books for the clarity of their design, so I had no hesitation in buying this Eyewitness guide to Paris. Each chapter represents an area of the city: the first page of the section gives a brief overview on the top half of the page, with a map on the lower half locating the major attractions. A double page spread follows with an aerial 3d illustration rather than a map, which is a nice touch because you can retrace some of your movements on your return and remember buildings and parks etc from the illustration. I went to Barcelona recently, and in the planning of the trip I consulted four guide books:

Lonely Planet's Barcelona City Guide
Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Barcelona and Catalonia
Cadogan Guides Barcelona (Dana Facaros and Michael Pauls)
Time Out Barcelona

All of them were good. I took two with me: Lonely Planet and Eyewitness.
The reasons I chose those two:

Eyewitness unfailingly has a good quality map, which in my view is LP's downfall. Eyewitness always includes a Street Finder Index which LP does not, and LP often misses out on streets other than the major ones, which can be very frustrating, especially in a city like Barca where there are many alleyways. As the other reviewer has said this book is is a nightmare. Badly laid out, with no map of the city overall making it difficult to understand where you are.
The restaurants that were tried in Bracciano were both disappointing. The shopping section was also poor - the major shopping mall at the termini was no more than you would get at the airport. Poorly written over complicated - the book lost its credibility and therfore ending up in the bin before it completey ruined our holiday.
Do not buy!!

As with all Eyewitness Guides, the multitude of glossy colour photographs are a real selling point of this guide. It's very helpful for pre-departure planning. The maps are good and integrate well with the text. There are also close up double page spreads focussing on the main sights, highlighting the best bits and mentioning the rest too.

The guide focusses on the sights, and achieves a good balance between showing highlights and 'best ofs' to help a time-poor traveller choose their itinary, while still showing the less famous attractions the city has to offer.

There is also information on places to eat and sleep, general cultural information, and practial information, plus a phrasebook. I found this section informative and well ... Read More:
