. Homicide:
by: David Simon
September 04, 2008
How do you fill the void left after watching the final episode of one of the greatest tv shows of all time ? Go back to the source and that's what this is without this book there is no The Wire. It's a remarkable book and one that hasn't really dated unlike the TV series of the same name.
The premise is well described David Simon writes about a year in the life of the homicide department of Baltimore what suprised me was that it isn't written for the journalist point of view so instead we get informed what the detectives are thinking. It's hard to explain that for the veteran detectives we see that there is no personal crusade to solve the crimes it's a job and not a highly paid one so if it's not the money what compels these individuals to keep going especially when faced ... . The Dark Heart of Italy
by: Tobias Jones
March 15, 2007
This book is a collection of second-hand stereotypes about Italy and Italians. I watched the author on a TV program struggling to put a few words together in Italian and asked myself how he could have gathered any insighgts on the Italian political/sociological situation with such a poor knowledge of the local language. Overall: a surprisingly shallow book and a serious source of embarassement for British journalism.

. The Paper Moon (Montalbano 9)
by: Andrea Camilleri
June 06, 2008
Montalbano is a wonderful invention - a human being, it would be hard not to like him. He adores good food and will travel out of his way to find it. He is infuriated by and infuriates his subordinates. He sits under his favourite olive tree to think, to find a solution to some vexing question. He wrestles with his work but he loves it. I've thoroughly enjoyed all the Montalbano series. Each one is like a good meal.

. Naples '44: An Intelligence Officer in the Italian Labyrinth
by: Norman Lewis
July 31, 2002
Norman Lewis's son is a friend of mine and has been for twenty years. For twenty years I've drunk beer, watched football, told jokes and (in the dim & distant past) chased girls with the son. I even met the father once. It was not until I read the back of a Norman Lewis book last year & saw the picture, that I put two and two together. "Yep, that's my Dad". Astonishing!
I read that book,A Dragon Apparent, and enjoyed it, but not really enough to run out & buy others. I dont read much travel writing in general but it was undeniably well written, interesting & felt it was doing me good. On a whim I bought this one, Naples 44, last week and it is a real step up. Dressed up as a diary of a place in time (there's a clue in the title as to where & when!), each entry is a beautifully ... Read More:
