. South America on a Shoestring (10th Edition/March 2007) : Big Trips on Small Budgets (Lonely Planet Shoestring Guides)
by: Danny Palmerlee
March 01, 2007
Whilst travelling through Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Paragruay and Brazil, I quickly realised that this book was not going to be much help 'in the field'. It is in urgent need of up dating; many of the hostels and hotels mentioned have either closed, renamed or vanished off the face of the earth. I used this guide to plan my trip, but upon arrival it did little more than fill up space in my rucksack. The maps are quite useful...to a point. Most of the restaurants, hostels etc are not in the right place on the map (which i found out to my cost when lugging my rucksack around Ascunsion). However, the layout is accurate and helps to orientate yourself around cities.
The information regarding major tourist attractions ... Read More:

. Brazilian Portuguese (Lonely Planet Phrasebook)
by: Marcia Monje de Castro
January 01, 2008
At first sight, a useful book despite a dictionary at the back that contains some glaring omissions of basic words such as 'from' and 'please', as well as other useful words such as 'sting'. Its culinary reader is threadbare too, with plenty of omissions - annoying when tried to decipher a menu.
But the real flaw is in the phonetic spellings of the Portuguese words. The author uses 'ng' to indicate the nasal vowels that characterise Brazilian Portuguese, but this only works about half the time. The rest of the time you're just mispronouncing the word.
The biggest omission of all, though, is as follows. In Brazilian Portuguese, when a 't' is followed by an 'e' or an 'i', this means the 't' is pronounced like the 'j' in jam ... Read More:

. Peru (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
by: Sara Benson, Paul Hellander, Rafael Wlodarski

Whenever I go traveling I always take a Lonely Planet with me, they are indispensable and Peru was no exception. While the book served me well and ensured my travels where well informed and trouble free.
But!, I feel the book is not up to lonely planets usual standard, the whole book was pitched at a too negative tone, it had me thinking I would be raped/mugged/attacked every 5 mins, to the contrary I felt entirely safe for all the time I was there. Many of the prices where incorrect despite the books recent publish date, I also found the descriptions of many of the hotels to be wrong, it seemed as if they had been randomly shuffled in editing.

. Argentina (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
by: Danny Palmerlee, et al
August 01, 2008
I have used Lonely Planet guides a number of times to good effect, however the Argentina guide was woefully inaccurate, resulting in a good deal of frustration. The maps are both out of date and in some cases never correct in the first place. A suggested option for tango in Buenos Aires led us into a tourist trap hell hole which ended up costing over £50 and the police getting involved. I think the book was written in 2003 and therefore is inadequate to guide a stranger.
In the end we abandonded the book and found life much easier. Argentina is a fabulous country - simply stunning. Buy another guide to avoid wasting your time there - but enjoy the place.

. Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
by: Danny Palmerlee, Michael Grosberg, Carolyn McCarthy
August 01, 2006
I bought this guide before I travelled around Ecuador and other parts of South America last summer. Although it was helpful, well presented and laid-out, I found the guide disppointing in two main ways: The maps used are sometimes inaccurate in terms of where the symbols for bus stations, hotels etc have been placed, and some street names do not match those given in the guide; The guide has been badly edited in a few places, meaning that it is difficult to understand what point the author is trying to make. I also found that a lot of information in this edition is long out of date (if you are buying this, make sure to print of a copy of Lonely Planet's updates from their website, although I don't know how useful they are either). I would ... Read More:
