. Puglia (Travellers) (Travellers)
by: Zoe Ross
May 24, 2007
Just the most uninspiring guide book I have ever seen. The description is just inaccurate. It is a small little book - there is no detail at all just short descriptions. The photography is really poor - the print is cheap so the images are washed out. When I bought it I didn't pick up that it was a Thomas Cook book or I wouldn't have got it, it is one of those freebie books thrown in with package holidays. I just feel cross inside. Luckily there is loads of stuff online about Puglia. It says there are maps inside - as if - there are tiny maps with the main roads and a few towns marked. You are seriously better off looking online or getting a hold of the Dorling Kindersly Italy book and using their very short chapter on Puglia - which is still ... Read More:

. Pan' E Pomodor - My Passage To Puglia
by: Ian R McEwan
October 31, 2007
You actually feel little for the author and his wife. There is no sense of real adventure or challenge in what they are doing. Her family lives in Vico. She speaks Italian. The author himself rarely needs to reference an Italian phase book to communicate. The setting is also misleading. Although Vico is set inland in the Gargano, there is no mention to the fact that the area is one big tourist trap and not as remote as Ian would make it seem. What is obvious is that both didn't bother researching buying a property abroad, not only in Italy but their botched attempts at buying in France. Anyone thinking about "living the dream" would be best spent reading one of the many "Buying a Property in Italy" publications or even better, scouring one of ... Read More:

from: Michelin Maps
2003-04
I was given this book to read by a friend in England, and was totally taken by surprise - this is a wonderful book; vivid, truthful and entertaining.

. Christ Stopped at Eboli (Penguin Modern Classics)
by: Carlo Levi
May 25, 2000
Carlo Levi was an anti-fascist in Mussolini's Italy(as well as a doctor)who was sentenced to a period of internal exile in the depths of rural southern Italy.
His portrait of the peasant world, with it's mixture of paganism, hunger and malaria is fantastic. He obviously empathises with the peasantry, but is never superior to them. Also, there is little or no self-pity("woe is me,a political exile").
This world vanished in the 1950's due to a combination of land reform, industrialisation and migration.Read Levi's account and wonder at a world that still existed in western Europe as recently as the late 1940s.
