I have been to Rome twice with this guidebook and had a fabulous time on both occasions. The restaurant recommendations are always spot on, as are the hotels. I've been to a number of museums and historical sights with it and been happy. Thanks to it I have some glorious memories of dining at amazing tucked-away places and went to art museums I might not otherwise have gone to. I find the Time Out guides help you avoid the tourist traps, especially when it comes to food!

I decided to read "Venice" in preparation for a week-long stay in the Italian city.

Broken into three sections -- The People, The City, The Lagoon -- "Venice" is not a chronological history of the city but a meandering look at its past, present and future. Nor is it a guidebook, although it does contain a mine of information about what to see and where to go.

I think "The Times" probably described it best when they said it was "a classic love letter to Italy's most iconic city", because it is, indeed, a beautiful missive dripping with exquisite descriptions. Not only was this book helpful when choosing where to stay - information was accurate and relevant - it was also invaluable in terms of finding ways to save money (which is a must in Venice!).
But the best feature about this book was its information on the places to visit. It saved us a fortune because we didn't need to buy guide books for any of the venues!
The book is written with fascinating tidbits of information, many of which will make you smile and laugh, so be careful not to read in church if you're not prepared to stifle your laughter.

A very, very good map of Venice, with lots on it. In fact, perhaps, too much. You have to read this map in advance of your trip - become adept at finding a grid reference for a restaurant, for example, or a "sight" if that's what you are on your way to see.
Good:
- the public transport routes are right, though not very obvious from the map, but there's an official "venice transport" map on the back.
- even the traghetto routes are right(a gondola ferry - E0.50 this year, 2008)
- "road" names are clear and easy to read, if you've got the right glasses on... you reach an age.....
- many reasonable restaurants/bars marked, but coded by cost, which means there are 20 or so entries marked as B on the map, the grid is crucial ... Read More:

I usually travel with LP so maybe I am a little biased but I did find this book up to their normally high standards.

The legendary confusion of Venice's allyways meant I was wary of this book's maps (esp considering LP's less than perfect record in that regard). However I was pleasantly surprised and in 4 days in the city did not get lost using them. It was a little annoying the way they were split across several pages but i guess that was necessary to acheive the accuracy.

The tips to the sights and the walking tours were exellent. The restaurant and shopping sections were ok. I cant comment on the hotels section as I was in an apartment.

Having spent a day in Florence with my mother using Lonely Planet and my dad using Rick Steeves - it was a nightmare! Restaurant recommendations were touristy or rubbish and it was hard to get around. I went and bought Time Out Florence from a bookshop near our hotel because of previous good experiences with Time Out Rome. The recommendations were spot on, and were equally good for a side trip to Pisa (botanical gardens were lovely and the chocolate shop and gelateria recommended on the river were fantastic). I highly recommend this book and encourage you to try as many recommended gelateria as possible - the three we tried were amazing.

Time Out guides are uniformly excellent, and this one is no exception. We used it for the Lago Maggiore, not for Milan. The amount of information available for the Lago was not large, but what was there was very useful. TO guides are especially good when it comes to restaurants. All of the ones we tried were very good. The history section is also very interesting and well written.

I used this guide for a short break in Venice in summer 2007. I like the Time Out shortlist guides, this one was the first I bought and I have purchased some more after finding this one useful.
One thing they are a bit short on though is practical information - public transport etc, and some of the details on visiting museums and which tickets to buy was a bit sketchy. All this information is in a short section at the back. However I liked the area-by-area approach, which certainly gave a flavour of Venice's different sestiere and made the book user-friendly. There is an individual map of each area too, but there isn't one of the whole of Venice, which would have been a useful addition.

very helpful if you are looking for a comprehensive guide to Venice. Spot on with it's information and giving an excellent overview of the City. Although Venice is an easy City to get around in and find your way, you might loose yourself in the many little streets. And then you want a reliable guide that gets you back on track. Gives great information about the usual tourist sites, but also invites you to make you own discoveries and lets you chose your tailor-made holiday. The only thing I would add is a guide to the best "Gelaterias" of the City! ;-) Wouldn't want to go on a holiday without my DK!
