This book helped greatly in finding walks in areas outside of the part of the Dolomites that we know best. Its not step by step detail and assumes some competence on the part of the user; thats fine because I need suggestions and a gentle steer, not hand holding. On return from Italy there were a small number of quibbles concerning changes in signage and other details that we had noticed along the way that we notified to Cicerone. We were very surprised to be contacted by the author to discuss the points raised. That's customer service and its very clear that its a guide written by an enthusiast: you can't want more.

I bought this book a few years ago for my first trip to the Dolomites; I could only find this and one other Dolomite Via Ferrata book in English. I found this book a Godsend; informative, well laid out with maps, photos, cross reference indexes, useful telephone number and local information.
This made my first Via Ferrata experience so much easier to plan and navigate.
I have since done a couple more trips and this book and Volume 2 have been my guides and are well thumbed.
I would recommend this book to anyone planning a Via Ferrata trip to the Dolomites whether a novice or seasoned ferraterist.

First and foremost it needs to be acknowledged that this appears to be the only (current) English language guidebook covering this area. As such, if you are a mono-linguistic English speaker who wants to buy a guidebook to help you identify where to seek out your via ferrata thrills, then stop reading this review and buy the book!

I bought this book prior to my first trip to the Dolomites after it was acknowledged in the UK magazine "Trail".

The centre area covered is approx 90 mins car drive from Verona/ Brescia and perhaps 2 hours from Milan (opposite direction) so easily accessible from the UK by scheduled and "low cost" airlines.

I walked the Alta Via 1 this summer in late August/early September. Martin Collins' book is an essential item if you intend to do this fantastic high-altitude trek. The profiles are fairly accurate, and the routes are very well described. The only criticism I had with the book is that some of the timings are ambitious to say the least (I am a very fit, a rower at university) and I have severe problems at keeping up with some of the timings, yet some of the timings I could easily beat. Apart from that, the advice is completely sound (except the bus to Lago di Braines does not leave from Villabassa train station). We've been coming to the Dolomites (to visit relatives) for years and have always found this book by some distance the most useful, with contact information for all the refuges, as well as some precise trail descriptions and great maps. Although we've only used it for some of their short walks so far, we're hoping to start on the AV1 this summer and again, while planning, find this book just invaluable! Great stuff!!!

I've been a fan of the Sunflower guides for 20 years and regret to say that this one isn't up to scratch. Other Sunflower guides follow a standard format and include small, but accurate maps and detailed route descriptions for each walk. The Dolomites guide is a translation of a German book and includes much irrelevant material, but skimps on maps and descriptions, rendering it unusable as a stand-alone walking guide.

This is a good guide book, as all the guide books in the series, but I did expect a bit more from it. I travelled around Italy together with my husband the summer of 2005, and we used this guide book a lot. But it is a guide book, nothing more. There are quite a bit of things that have changed since the book was last edited, but this is expected. We are planning to send the findings we did to the editor, so that it can be added or changed in the next edition, perhaps.
We felt that the book focused too much on churches, castles etc, and a lot of really interesting things were missed - like the local food markets, which we love to visit. There wasn't much of "different" or "special" recommendations, it was just focusing on the "What to see if ... Read More:

This is a beautifully presented book with 500 pages full of ideas and superb photos for wonderful Alpine walks in 6 countries. These outlines of treks throughout the Alps are exactly what you need for an overview of which treks where may fit your next trip. Mostly based on treks with accomadation with bed and breakfast, evening meal (demi pension in France) and picnic sandwiches for the next days walking mean you do not have to carry a tent or take a warm sleeping bag or food or stove. The author has very good tested suggestions throughout the Alps. After deciding where to go you just buy the listed detailed guide with each days walking, accomadation phone numbers, and local transport, order maps from the Map Shop, buy a cheap air ticket.
